He went on to receive a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2021.
In between degrees, Cleverly served as a research associate at MIT’s Space Initiative before working full-time as an engineer at companies including Lockheed Martin and MITRE. He now serves as Northwood's chief technology officer alongside his wife.
He proposed to Mendler in 2019
Although it's unclear exactly when Mendler and Cleverly started dating, the engineer first made an appearance on the Disney Channel alum’s Instagram in 2017.
Two years later, Mendler announced their engagement on Instagram, posting a picture of her and Cleverly posing by the beach while showing off her ring.
She wrote in the caption, “We thought we should share the news. Griff you are a deep thinker, a steadfast companion, a cheerleader and a challenger, and the biggest goof I know. Looking forward to holding ur hand forever.”
He celebrated their engagement with the cast of Good Luck Charlie
Family both on-screen and off, the cast of Good Luck Charlie attended Mendler and Cleverly's engagement party in August 2019. The “Ready or Not” singer posted a series of photos on Instagram from the night, including a group photo with Leigh-Allyn Baker, Jason Dolley and Bradley Steven Perry, who played her mom and brothers, respectively, on the show.
“I expected to be excited to join my life with Griff, but I didn’t know that being engaged would be such a reflective time to celebrate the community that supports us,” Mendler captioned the post. “I’ve learned that being engaged is the time for family and friends new and old to provide the scaffolding of joy and love that builds a marriage.”
He married Mendler in 2019
The couple tied the knot in October 2019 at an intimate beachside wedding surrounded by their close family and friends. Mendler’s Lemonade Mouth costar Naomi Scott was one of her bridesmaids. In an interview with Extra at the time, Mendler opened up about the special day and called the ceremony “magical.”
“There was a great sunset and there was actually even this dude who built a sandcastle behind us while we were getting married,” she recalled. “In his board shorts, constructing this beautiful amazing sandcastle. While we are doing our vows, I could just see him in my eye line.”
Cleverly also posted a celebratory tribute on Instagram writing, “Got to marry my wild love this weekend. Looking forward to a life of learning, exploring and love with this one! Glad for all the wonderful family and friends that were able to be a part of it. Won’t forget the warmth, kindnes, and help of those all around us. Here’s to our new family!!”
They co-founded a start-up together
In 2023, Mendler and Cleverly added yet another milestone to their impressive résumés by co-founding a space startup together. In an interview with CNBC, Mendler shared that their company, Northwood, aims to create “a data highway between Earth and space” by mass-producing ground stations that can connect to satellites in space. The pair are working side by side at Northwood, with Mendler serving as CEO and Cleverly as chief technology officer.
The actress-turned-tech entrepreneur also shared that the idea for their venture came to fruition while she and Cleverly were spending time in New Hampshire with family during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“While everybody else was making their sourdough starters, we were building antennas out of random crap we could find at Home Depot…and receiving data from [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] satellites,” Mendler recalled to CNBC. Their company’s name is also inspired by a lake in New Hampshire.
They adopted a child together in 2022
Amid announcing the launch of Northwood in February 2024, Mendler also revealed that she and Cleverly had adopted a child together.
“The other news I wanted to share is I’m a mama to a sweet 4yo boy,” Mendler wrote on X. “Started fostering in 2021, adopted near Christmas of 2022. I’m so lucky — being a parent is the biggest gift and most defining experience there is.”
She also shared a photo of Cleverly and their son standing on the beach at sunset. The couple has yet to reveal their son’s name.
They love the beach
From posing for their engagement photo by the beach to getting married by the ocean, the couple clearly loves spending time by the water.
Over the years, Mendler has posted a number of photos on Instagram of her and Cleverly enjoying days by the sea, whether it’s going surfing or taking morning walks.
In a 2019 post, Mendler captured moments of her and Cleverly watching the sunrise at the beach and wrote: “Friday morning he wants to wake up at 5 to drive to the beach and catch the sunrise. It’s quiet and the seagulls are catching their breakfast and he says, ‘we don’t feel the world turn,’ but we see the fiery sun jump up and even from so far away it burns our eyes and you remember the universe is big and powerful.”
