Brie Larson crashes into Blockbuster Video, punches an old lady, and flies into action in long-awaited first trailer for 'Captain Marvel'

Two weeks ago, Brie Larson tried, and failed, to break the internet with an Entertainment Weekly cover story about her Marvel venture Captain Marvel — a reveal that many found underwhelming, given that most assumed her initial tweet was foreshadowing a trailer that never materialized. Those fans can now rejoice, as the first live-action look at the heroine has arrived. And while it may not be great enough to destroy our online infrastructure, it’ll no doubt further amplify excitement for the upcoming superhero saga.

The above teaser — which premiered on ABC’s Good Morning America, with Larson introducing it from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. — will pair Larson’s Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, with Samuel L. Jackson’s two-eyed Nick Fury, here de-aged through the magic of digital effects.

Newly revealed in this promo is that directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s story will involve Captain Marvel’s arrival on Earth (crashing through the roof of a Blockbuster Video, and into the “Action” section, per the 1990s time period) as something of an amnesiac who only has faint memories of her pre-superhero days. And further glimpses of otherworldly insanity suggest that she may have been the subject of extraterrestrial experiments that resulted in her extraordinary powers.

Unsurprisingly, no answers to those questions are revealed. However, we do see her teaming up with Starforce, an intergalactic police force — as well as punching out an old lady on a subway train. Presumably, that elderly victim is a Skrull villain in disguise. The film will incorporate elements of Marvel Comics’ classic Kree-Skrull War storyline, two alien races with the latter notorious for their shape-shifting ability.

The Kree have already been established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You’ll recall a radical Kree, Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), was the chief villain in the original Guardians of the Galaxy; he’ll be back in this film.

And though we only get a very brief shot of Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, Jude Law’s alien military commander and Clark Gregg’s young agent Phil Coulson (with hair!), we’re treated to considerable footage of Larson herself in action — with matching shots of her clenching her fist in anticipation of battle (as a young girl, a pilot, and Captain Marvel) underscoring the female might that’s central to its story.

Finally, we get a brief glimpse at the pager we last saw in the end-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War, suggesting once more how integral Captain Marvel will be in helping defeat Thanos.

Fans, it seems, are thrilled.

Captain Marvel lands in theaters on March 8, 2019.
