British Empire: U.K.-Produced Shows Rule Netflix in Latest Data Dump

The theme song for Netflix’s data dump for the first half of 2024 might as well be “Rule, Britannia.”

Four U.K.-produced series are at the top of the streamer’s internal rankings for January to June, led by Fool Me Once with 107.5 million views worldwide over the course of those six months. Season three of Bridgerton (91.9 million views), Baby Reindeer (87.6 million) and The Gentlemen (75.9 million) round out the top four.

All told, Netflix’s 280 million subscribers watched 94 billion hours’ worth of programming on the service in the first half of the year, up from about 90 billion hours for the second half of 2023. Netflix’s first engagement report, covering the first half of 2023, covered about 100 billion hours of viewing.

As with the last report, the list of top series spotlights Netflix’s global reach. In addition to the four British series at the top of the list the top 10 also includes the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (71.1 million views), Griselda (69.2 million), American Nightmare (55 million), 3 Body Problem (52.4 million), Money Heist spinoff Berlin (48.5 million) and One Day (39.4 million).

The release of Bridgerton season three also had a halo effect on the prior two seasons, both of which finished in the top 12, and prequel Queen Charlotte, which ranked 21st. All three saw their view counts more than double from the second half of 2023.

(“Views” here, and across the streaming landscape, are calculated by dividing total viewing time for a title by its running time. For instance, the 107.5 million views for Fool Me Once equates to 689.5 million hours of watch time.)

On the film side, the Millie Bobby Brown-led thriller Damsel was the most-watched title — series or movie — of the first half of the year with 143.8 million views (equivalent to 263.7 million hours of viewing). Kevin Hart’s Lift (129.4 million views) and the Oscar-nominated Society of the Snow (103.8 million) also racked up more than 100 million views.
