Britney Spears Reacted to Blake Lively Rewearing Her Dress & It’s Not What We Expected
At the New York premiere of It Ends With Us on Aug. 6, Blake Lively showed up and showed out. In addition to looking radiant with her soft Old-Hollywood waves, the star paid homage to one of her idols, Britney Spears. On the carpet, she re-wore one of Spears’ iconic looks: the Versace butterfly dress from 2002.
For the first time since the “Toxic” singer wore the dress over two decades ago, Lively brought the dress back to life on the carpet.

And, a few days since her turning-heads moment on the carpet, Spears shared her reaction. “UPDATED VERSION OF MY 2002 VERSACE DRESS ?? !!!” Spears wrote in the caption on Instagram alongside a video of her dancing and twirling in a beaded butterfly mini-dress, per People. “I LIKE IT WAY BETTER,” she continued. “SHOWS MY LEGS !!! ??????????.”
Shortly after, Spears edited the caption to make sure fans knew she wasn’t shading Lively. “I’m no @blakelively but I like it,” she added.
A source for Page Six also reassured Lively stans. “She did not shade Blake and felt honored,” the source said.
So while Spears’ reaction is not exactly what fans or Lively herself might’ve expected from the homage, it seems Spears was just following the wave and posting something fun on Instagram. After all, it would be hard to take any of what Lively said at the premiere as anything but complementary.
“Britney has meant so much to me,” Lively told Entertainment Tonight on the carpet. “As a millennial girl, Britney was the ultimate reason you want to sparkle and shine and be your most vibrant self.”
“I couldn’t believe I found it,” she said of the dress. “This dress should be in the Met.”
And, shortly before the premiere, Lively shared a sweet tribute to Spears on Instagram. “The ultimate queen who made us all want to sparkle and write and share our stories,” Lively wrote in a Story. “Britney, us millennials all have a story of a moment, or of years that you made us want to shine and inspire awe, with strength, and joy and immensely hard work.”
“Thank you for your example and your contribution to women telling their stories,” she continued. “So excited about your Biopic and all you have to come.”
Looks like Lively is Spears’ number one fan, whether there’s a little shade involved or not!
