Brittany Mahomes is finding herself mired in another controversy after fans noticed she was reportedly liking — and then unliking —  an Instagram post by Donald Trump. The former president’s social media account shared a graphic on Aug. 13 with his “2024 GOP Platform” that probably didn’t sit well with most Taylor Swift fans.

The “Swifties for Harris” campaign is going strong, having raised $140,000 on Tuesday, Aug. 27 in a Zoom rally featuring Carole King and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Swift hasn’t endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris yet, but her prior politics indicate that she leans left after endorsing President Joe Biden in 2020. In 2019, the 34-year-old pop star revealed to The Guardian how she felt about Donald Trump.

“The thing I can’t get over right now is gaslighting the American public into being like… ‘If you hate the president, you hate America.’ We’re a democracy—at least, we’re supposed to be—where you’re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate,” she explained. “I really think that he thinks this is an autocracy.” Her strong opinions about the controversial political figure weigh heavily on Swifties’ minds because Mahomes seems to be in favor of some of the former president’s platform, including “Keep men OUT of women’s sports.”

Mahomes took to her Instagram Story on Saturday, Aug. 24 after feeling the heat from the “Cruel Summer’ singer’s followers. “I mean honestly,” Mahomes wrote, via Newsweek. “To be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep-rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood. There’s no reason your brain is fully developed, and you hate to see others doing well.” Just two days later, she added another post, writing, “Contrary to the tone of the world today….you can disagree with someone, and still love them. You can have differing views, and still be kind.”

Swift and Mahomes might be in the agree-to-disagree part of their friendship, but it could get dicey if an official endorsement for Kamala Harris comes to fruition. “As the female vote will be crucial in swaying the election, Swift’s endorsement could be crucial in influencing young female voters and reinforcing the notion that Harris, like [Barack] Obama before her, is presiding over the support of a movement rather than just a demographic in the national votes,” Mark Wheeler, author of Celebrity Politics, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Clearly, Swift’s extraordinary popularity could bolster any candidate’s campaign, and her endorsement might indicate a significant shift in the narrative of the campaign.”

That could make Swift’s friendship with Mahomes an awkward PR moment during the election season, but it doesn’t look like she backing away from hanging out with her friends. It looks like Swift is accepting of her pal’s political differences even if they don’t match her beliefs.
