Broadway Box Office: ‘Sunset Boulevard’ Hits $1M, ‘Romeo +Juliet’ Draws Crowds

Romeo + Juliet, starring Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor, and Sunset Boulevard continued to be some of the hot tickets on Broadway last week as the two shows entered their second week of previews.

Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, brought $1.08 million across its first week of six previews, in the St. James Theater, and played to a capacity of 93 percent. The average ticket price fell from last week’s high of $187.42 to $118.25. Opening night is scheduled for Oct. 20.

Romeo + Juliet brought in just above $950,000 across seven previews, while playing to more than 100 percent capacity at the Circle in the Square Theatre, a smaller theater than Sunset Boulevard, and with an average ticket price of $166.71, the third highest in the industry for the week. Opening night is scheduled for Oct. 24.

Among the new fall shows, McNeal, starring Robert Downey Jr., opened at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on Sept. 28 to mixed reviews, and brought in close to $970,000 across six performances, rather than the typical seven, with an average ticket price of $147.61.

Left on Tenth, a new Delia Ephron play starring Julianna Marguiles and Peter Gallagher, grossed $562,408 across eight preview performances at the James Earl Jones Theatre, playing to a capacity of 69 percent. The play opens Oct. 23.

The revival of Our Town, starring Jim Parsons, Zoey Deutch and Katie Holmes, grossed $562,408 across eight preview performances, with some tickets comped for press previews, before opening at the Barrymore Theatre Oct. 10.

Wicked, The Lion King and Hamilton topped the list of highest grossing shows, followed by The Outsiders, which inched up to average ticket prices of $168.18, the highest in the industry for the week, and Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen.

Meanwhile, Cole Escola’s Oh Mary! continues to grow, grossing $1.18 million and playing to 100 percent capacity at the Lyceum Theater, with an average ticket price of $164.31.
