Broadway Musical ‘Suffs’ Sets January Closing Date
Suffs, a Broadway musical about the women’s suffrage movement, is closing on Jan. 5, 2025, after about 10 months on Broadway.
The musical, which stars Shaina Taub, who also wrote its book and score, had the backing of Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai, who were both named as producers, and won Tony Awards for the best book and score.

Still, the musical, which opened on Broadway on April 18, has seen a gradual decline in grosses since hitting a high of $942,785.35 in the week ending June 23, which is the week following the Tony Awards. Suffs performed at the ceremony, and took home the two trophies, but did not take home the top prize of best musical.
Attendance has been in the 80 percent to 90 percent capacity range for most weeks of the run, but the higher running costs for Broadway shows make it hard to sustain a show without grosses consistently closer to the $1 million level.
A national tour will launch at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in September 2025, with additional cities to come.
The show is a largely sung-through history of the women’s movement to gain the right to vote, with Taub portraying activist Alice Paul. The musical, which is directed by Leigh Silverman, premiered Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in April 2022.
“Bringing the story of the suffs to the stage has been an honor and we are deeply grateful to our cast and company,” said producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman. “Watching audiences encounter the inspiring women of Suffs, many of whom they had never heard of before, has been extremely profound, especially in this election season. We are thrilled to have played a part in giving new life to the suffragists’ fight for the vote through Shaina Taub’s award-winning book and score and look forward to sharing it with audiences across the country.”
This is the latest musical from the 2023-2024 season to set a closing date, following the recent announcements made by The Notebook and Water for Elephants, and the announcements from The Who’s Tommy and Lempicka earlier this year.
