Brody Malone’s Father Reads Emotional Letter to Olympic Gymnast That Will Move You to Tears
John Malone fought back tears while sharing how proud he is of his son
Brody Malone’s dad is a proud father.
During NBC's broadcast of the 2024 Summer Olympics on Monday night, July 29, John Malone shared a heartfelt message for his 24-year-old son and members of Team USA as they competed in the men's artistic all-around gymnastics final. Team USA ended up winning the bronze medal, ending a 16-year medal drought.
The emotional clip, which showed John reading from a piece of paper as photo montages appeared on the screen, was also shared on social media. Watch the powerful video below:
"I want to tell you about my oldest boy Brody," John began in an TikTok video posted by several of NBC’s accounts.
"He was born with his mother's smile and with my fire for competition. After he broke his arm climbing out of his crib when he was two, we got him into gymnastics so he could get all of his energy out,” he continued.

Footage then showed Brody tumbling as a child, and John recalled how he and his wife Tracey met during college in an equestrian program — which meant all of their children “were on horseback by kindergarten."
The couple raised their family in Cedartown, Ga., which John considered “a great place for Brody to grow up.”
"That was until 2012 when we lost our Trace to cancer,” John said of his late wife and Brody's mother, Tracey Malone.
According to John, the loss seemingly forced his eldest son to refocus his energy.
"Like me, Brody doesn't like to show his emotions too much," he said. "So, I think he buried himself in competition and let all of his pain out through sports."
"Competing at the Olympics was a dream Brody and his mom had together. I know Tracey's watching over Brody still and I can see her smile and hear her laugh and feel her joy,” John said before becoming visibly emotional.

“So, son, go get 'em tonight. Your mom and I are so proud of you."
The Paris Games marks Brody’s second time competing in the Olympics, as he was also part of the 2021 Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Brody’s bronze win comes as he prepares for another special life moment.
In an exclusive with The Knot last updated on July 17, the three-time United States national all-around champion opened up about his upcoming wedding to fiancée Serena Ortiz.
Brody's father and fiancée were both in attendance in Paris to see his medal-winning moment.
The pair have known each other since high school and got engaged on New Year's Eve in 2023.
"I made a conscious decision that I was going to see him once a month, because I knew he didn't have time," Ortiz told The Knot, noting that she took online classes so she could travel to see him since their colleges were on separate coasts.

"If she wasn't willing to be that dedicated, it may have been a different story. I'm super blessed and grateful that she was as dedicated as she was to our relationship,” Brody said. “She was an honorary member of the Stanford men's gymnastics team."
Ortiz also revealed she knew the proposal was coming when her parents and best friend joined the couple on the holiday vacation.
"That tipped me off a little bit," she said while smiling.
They are currently planning a May 2025 wedding near his hometown.
