Update: In June 2015, Caitlyn Jenner came out as a transgender woman. This content was written in April 2015 before Jenner publicly announced her full transition.

In the weeks leading up to his soul-baring 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Bruce Jenner kept a relatively low profile. But despite the media fanfare around his first public admission that he is transitioning from male to female, Jenner, 65, has been privately adapting to his transition process for quite some time.

“He is living as much as possible as a woman and figuring out what that exactly means or entails,” a source close to the family tells PEOPLE.

While his physical appearance has been noticeably changing over the last year, the former Olympian has been taking additional steps to live as a woman. “Dressing is a matter of taste – women can wear track suits – but those visiting him at his house now would find him dressing on the feminine side,” says the family insider.

Jenner’s gradual transition, including recently getting breast implants, is “an ongoing process,” says the source. “He is doing this in stages and very gradually and in a healthy way, but more and more, and certainly in private, he is living as a woman.”

As he adjusts to physical, emotional and lifestyle changes, Jenner is embracing the challenge and his newfound freedom. “Every day is a new experience but he is more comfortable with who he is now than ever before,” says the source.

Another especially meaningful step? When Jenner publicly reveals his new name, a moment that will likely happen around summertime, says the source. “(At that point), ‘Bruce’ will be no more.”
