In a new promo for his 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, the Olympian and reality star opens up about wanting to protect those closest to him.

“I can’t let myself hurt them,” says Jenner, who has six children (including teenage daughters Kylie and Kendall Jenner) and is the stepfather to Khloé, Kourtney, Rob and Kim Kardashian.

“My whole life has been getting me ready for this,” he says in the clip, later adding, “It made me who I am.”

The interview will mark the first time Jenner, 65, has spoken publicly about his journey.

“He seems happy that he can live his life the way he feels he’s intended to,” a family insider told PEOPLE in March. “His kids all love him very much and would do anything for him.”

Bruce Jenner – The Interview airs Friday at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
