Bruce Springsteen debuts film 'Western Stars,' adding to his constellation of work
He may be the star of the movie, but don’t call Bruce Springsteen a movie star quite yet.
He turned down the title on the blue carpet of the New York premiere of his film “Western Stars” Wednesday at the Metrograph Commissary in New York City.
“That’s me all right,” Springsteen said. “I’ll let you know when I find out.”
“Western Stars” is a concert film shot in a barn in front of a small audience on the rocker’s Colts Neck, New Jersey, property. Vignettes starring a solo Springsteen, set in the Southwest and California, preface performances of the songs of “Western Stars,” released as a music album in June.
“We’re always looking for a fresh way to continue the conversation with your audience, so the last five years have been the some of the most creative years in my life,” Springsteen said. “I had the book (‘Born to Run’), I had the play (‘Springsteen on Broadway’), now we got the film and the album, so it’s been a really good, creative period. And to turn 70, you feel like you’re at the top of your game.
“It’s satisfying.”

There was plenty of star-power at the premiere.
Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa were joined by Ralph Lauren, Clive Davis, Jon Stewart, Edward Burns and wife Christy Turlington, Jimmy Iovine, E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt, Harvey Keitel, Gayle King, manager Jon Landau, daughter Jessica Springsteen and brother-in-law Michael Scialfa.
Most had not seen the film and were anticipating it.
“Well, he’s good at all things,” Lauren said.
Springsteen co-directed the film with long-time collaborator Thom Zimny.
The rocker addressed the audience at the Metrograph before the movie played.
“Friends and family from New Jersey are here,” said Springsteen after acknowledging the presence of Davis and Iovine. “I don’t know what else to say except the person who is at the center of this picture is my lovely wife. So enjoy the ‘Western Stars’.”
“Western Stars” is due in theaters Oct. 25. Preview showings are also scheduled for Oct. 19 and 23 at www.fathomevents.com.
