Bruce Springsteen orders five dozen hot dogs to go in Long Branch, and few people noticed

Hot dog! Bruce Springsteen stopped by Max's Bar and Grill in Long Branch and picked up five dozen franks on Aug. 10.

“He came in today to bring them to an event he was going to,” said Mary Kate Schiller, bar manager at Max's. “He bought them to cook at an event so we gave him the hot dogs, sauerkraut, relish and the buns. “

Springsteen, who lives in Colts Neck, recently returned to the U.S. after a European summer tour with the E Street Band. The Boss made a surprise appearance on stage with Zach Bryan for two songs at the country star's Aug. 7 show at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Springsteen and the E Street Band begin shows in the U.S. and Canada on Thursday, Aug. 15, at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. Upcoming concerts include a headliner appearance at the Sea Hear Now festival on Sunday, Sept. 15, on the beach in Asbury Park.

Schiller isn't able to make the Sea Hear Now show — she's getting married that weekend.

As for the hot dogs, Springsteen is a fan of the Jersey Shore variety.

The Boss brought up the topic on an April 2020 broadcast of his “From His Home to Yours” DJ show on SiriusXM's E Street Radio, which took place during the pandemic.

“What do you miss? I miss going to Max’s and the Windmill and getting a hot dog,” Springsteen said. “I miss walking along the promenade and beach boardwalk in Asbury Park. I miss sitting at the bar and having some beers and drinks with some friends.”

Max's has been serving up hot dogs in Long Branch since 1928. Springsteen is not their only famous fan. Frank Sinatra, who used to summer in Long Branch, was also a customer.

The spot was quiet on Saturday afternoon when Springsteen and a friend stopped by. Schiller was the only one who recognized the rock 'n' roll legend.

“We love to see him at Max's and we can't wait to see him again,” said Schiller of Springsteen, who snapped a pic with the Boss. “We hope he's having a great summer and he enjoys all his hot dogs.”
