‘Building The Band’ Music Competition Series Set At Netflix
Netflix is bolstering its entertainment formats unit with a big new music competition series.
The streamer has ordered Building The Band (w/t) as it shifts its focus away from cable-esque fare to competing with the major broadcast networks for the next The Voice or American Idol.

Check back tomorrow for an interview with new Netflix reality boss Jeff Gaspin on the company’s new strategy.
Building the Band seeks to discover the next great music group without bandmates initially meeting face-to-face. The series brings together 50 of the most talented singers to compete for a chance to form their own band without ever seeing each other. All they have to go on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit. What will happen when the bands finally meet and… looks, choreography, and style come into play?
The series comes from The Wall producer Remarkable Entertainment, which is part of Banijay UK.
Cat Lawson, Alison Holloway, Katrina Morrison and Clara Elliot exec produce.
“It’s going to be an interesting social experiment paired with a singing competition,” Gaspin told Deadline. “At Netflix, we like to twist it a little bit so it’s not just completely straightforward, it’s not like a show you’ve seen elsewhere.”
Separately, the streamer is bringing together a slew of stars from across the Netflix Reality Universe for Battle Camp. The series will sees familiar faces return to face a physical and mental competition, where a giant spinning wheel randomly decides who stays and who goes. In order to keep their name off that wheel, these reality stars need to be unbeatable in challenges, unbreakable in punishments and unhateable in camp, as everyone has a vote. The player who achieves all three, becomes the ultimate Netflix reality competitor and takes home the $250,000 prize.
The series comes from Britain’s Got Talent producer Thames, which is part of Fremantle. Louise Peet, Ashley Whitehouse, Hannah Ganio and Rebecca McLaughlin exec produce.
