A television series based on The ‘Burbs has been given a straight-to-series by Peacock.

Released in 1989, The ‘Burbs is a black comedy film directed by Joe Dante about a group of neighbors who come to believe that the newest residents in their suburban community are hiding some sort of dark secret. It stars Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman, Rick Ducommun, and more.

Peacock has now given a straight-to-series order for a new television adaptation of the iconic film.

What do we know about Peacock’s new The ‘Burbs show?

“Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple returning to the husband’s childhood home,” the series’ logline reads. “Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.”

Keke Palmer will star in the series as an undisclosed character. Palmer’s filmography includes 2004’s Barbershop 2: Back in Business, 2006’s Madea’s Family Reunion, 2012’s Ice Age: Continental Drift, 2019’s Hustlers, 2022’s Lightyear, 2022’s Nope, 2023’s Under the Boardwalk, and more. She’s also starred in a number of television series such as Winx Club, Masters of Sex, Scream Queens, Scream: Resurrection, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, among other titles.

No other casting information has been announced at this time.

Celeste Hughey is writing the series and serves as an executive producer alongside Palmer, Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, Aimee Carlson, Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner, and Natalie Berkus. Dana Olsen, who wrote the 1989 movie, will serve as co-executive producer.

The series will be filmed in Los Angeles at the same location — the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood — as the original movie.

A release date for the new The ‘Burbs show has not yet been set by Peacock.
