Call It ‘Editorial Rap!’ Doechii, JT Drop Collab ‘Alter Ego’
Credit the Swamp Princess for pioneering a new genre.
On Friday, Doechii released her new single “Alter Ego” featuring City Girls’ JT, and with it, she ushers in a new Eurodance-inspired rap style she’s coined as “editorial rap.”

“I accidentally created my own genre with this one.. this record doesn’t sound like anything out right now,” Doechii said of the song. “I’m so excited for y’all to experience this song, this visual, and this ERA with me!”
“When they ask you, tell ’em it’s editorial rap: if hip hop and house music had a baby,” Doechii added.
JT and Doechii have been teasing the track for weeks now and even did an interview together for Interview Magazine. “When you sent me the record, girl, I was like, ‘What the fuck? She think I can make a song like this?'” JT said. “But thank you for challenging me. I’m very hesitant when I make music. I’m a perfectionist. I want that shit to sound good when I send it back.”
“You killed it … There was a lot of names that was thrown out, but I was like, ‘No. JT.’ Because you balance it out,” Doechii responded. “It’s something about your essence and your energy. You literally made me re-love this song all over again.”
Doechii teased the single while opening for Doja Cat on The Scarlet Tour last year.
“Alter Ego” marks Doechii’s first release of 2024 after dropping tracks such as “Pacer,” “Booty Drip,” and “Universal Swamp Anthem” last year. As for JT, the City Girls rapper released her solo single “Sideways” this year after joining Kali Uchis on “Mu?ekita” last year.
Doechii was named one of Rolling Stone‘s Future 25 last summer. “I want to do everything,” she told Rolling Stone at the time. “I want to just try everything in music until I get sick of it and I want to move on to something else. So I’ll do everything. It could go from classical to Afrobeats to whatever the hell. Maybe I’ll make a genre, I don’t know.”
