Who Has Camila Cabello Dated? A Look at Her Past Relationships, From Shawn Mendes and Matthew Hussey
After splitting from Austin Kevitch in February 2023, Camila Cabello briefly rekindled her relationship with Shawn Mendes
Camila Cabello is a self-proclaimed “hopeless romantic” but prefers to keep her relationships out of the public eye.
The “Bam Bam” artist had her first serious relationship with life coach and author Matthew Hussey. They dated for over a year before calling it quits in June 2019. The following month, Cabello and longtime friend Shawn Mendes ensued a two-year whirlwind relationship. After the singers went their separate ways in November 2021, she had a brief romance with the co-founder and CEO of the Lox Club dating app, Austin Kevitch.
While Cabello has had a few high-profile relationships, she told Latina in March 2017 that she tries to keep details to herself. “I get why people are interested in my love life, but I don’t want to give people that piece of me because it is the most important part,” she said.
Although she's a champion for love, Cabello revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show in October 2022 that she stays off dating apps because people's intentions aren't always clear. Still, the "Havana" vocalist understands the importance of putting herself out there.
"It's more about just stepping into life," she told PEOPLE in January 2023. "I think it's like — you're always meeting people. You should always be making friends. You should always be having new experiences. I don't think dating is really any different."
Here’s a look back at Camila Cabello’s dating history.
Austin Mahone
Cabello and singer Austin Mahone first met at the Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day event in August 2013.
“Austin caught Camila’s eye when they were both in New York for the MTV VMAs,” a friend of the duo told PEOPLE at the time. “They met the day before at the Arthur Ashe Kids Day and have been in touch ever since.”
Fifth Harmony toured with the “What About Love” singer the following summer, but the pair didn’t confirm their romance until November 2014. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked the girl group who was "the Mahone girlfriend," per E! News. Cabello replied, "That would be me," before dodging the question of how long they had been dating.
That same month, Mahone opened up to Teen Vogue about his relationship with Cabello. “I wasn't looking for a relationship, but we became really good friends when we were on tour," he said. "She's an amazing girl, and we have the best time together."
By the end of November 2014, however, the couple had called it quits. During an interview with 96.1 KISSFM, Cabello revealed that she and Mahone were “not together anymore” and that “things happen.”
After their breakup, Mahone confirmed he was dating Becky G in May 2015 and revealed to MTV that he had never been in a “real relationship before.” Cabello took to X (formerly Twitter) the same day and said, “Damn ... good to know.”
Speaking with Seventeen later that month, Cabello said she didn’t “regret anything” about her relationship with Mahone. “It was my first kiss, my first love," she said. "It's important to learn about liking somebody and being swept away, but it wasn't meant to be.”
Matthew Hussey
In February 2018, Cabello sparked romance rumors when she was spotted with Hussey on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The pair were photographed frolicking and kissing on the beach, per Entertainment Tonight.
They struck up a relationship after meeting on the set of Today in late 2017. Speaking on Dax Shepard's podcast Armchair Expert, Cabello revealed that she and Hussey crossed paths on the set of the morning show, and she was familiar with his work. The singer and author went to dinner that night and started dating.
In an interview with Marie Claire in November 2018, Cabello opened up about her relationship with the life coach. The pop star told the outlet she was “in love” with Hussey and felt "butterflies" when he watched her perform.
“Any time he’s there, I get super nervous. I stutter or my hands are shaky,” she said. “It’s annoying, because we’ve been together for kind of like a long time now, but every time, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I have to talk now.’ ”
Cabello added, “He’s so similar to me. In person, we’re just weird and silly and stupid together. He makes me the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
After a year of dating, the couple made their public debut at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in February 2019, where they posed for photographers together. But four months later, Cabello and Hussey split a few days after the singer released her collaboration “Se?orita” with Mendes.
Speaking with Clash magazine in July 2019, Cabello opened up about her breakup with Hussey. “I feel like I can be much more honest with myself and other people because obviously I’m growing up and I have a more grounded sense of who I am,” she explained. “I’ve fallen in love and I’ve experienced life. I feel so much more alive now, and I don’t feel scared anymore.”
In December 2019, the Cuban native released her sophomore album, Romance, which partly drew from her relationship with Hussey.
"Every song is its own story. It was inspired by, I was in my first serious relationship at the beginning of this album. That's what inspired Romance and it being about falling in love,” Cabello shared on the British TV show Lorraine, via Entertainment Tonight. "All of the stories are just my life and what’s happened the last two years.”
Since then, she has looked back on their romance, calling it "the perfect first relationship," but recognized that they were at different points in their lives.
Shawn Mendes
Cabello and Mendes met in 2014 when they both opened up for Mahone on tour. The singers followed up on their encounter with the release of their first collaboration, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" in 2015.
While the pair denied romance rumors for years, they confirmed their relationship in the summer of 2019 after releasing their second song together, “Se?orita.”
In July 2019, the two were spotted holding hands in Los Angeles and again at a Fourth of July party. Mendes later revealed that he and Cabello made their relationship official at the holiday bash.
The couple continued to build their relationship over the next few months: They were seen kissing on the beach in Miami, celebrating Mendes’ 21st birthday in New York City and performing their duet in Toronto.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Cabello and Mendes quarantined together and adopted a puppy named Tarzan. In an interview with Audacy Check-In, the “Wonder” singer shared that his downtime with Cabello had “really brought [them] together.”
He later reflected on the lessons he took from her. "She’s really so brave and courageous in love," he told PEOPLE in December 2020. "I'm constantly learning from her."
The duo celebrated their second anniversary in July 2021 with a trip to the Caribbean. Cabello shared some photos from the vacation and wrote, "Happy anniversary Kuko ?? here’s to more joy, more friendship, and more love.”
However, a few months later, the couple announced their split with a joint statement in November 2021.
"Hey guys, we've [decided] to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever ??," it read. "We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward ?????? Camila and Shawn."
Cabello and Mendes both released songs about their breakup, including Mendes' "When You're Gone" — which he ran by Cabello before releasing it. He later told Ryan Seacrest that the pair were “so friendly” and being able to write about his life experiences was “cathartic.”
By April 2023, they sparked reconciliation rumors after they were spotted kissing at Coachella. According to a PEOPLE source, though, they had "been friendly for several months." Cabello and Mendes continued to spend quality time together — holding hands by the beach, shopping and attending Taylor Swift’s Eras tour together.
The couple went their separate ways again in June 2023, just two months after their reconciliation.
"Shawn is still growing and discovering himself. He needs time to himself to do what makes him happy," a source told PEOPLE. "He has a lot more living and learning in his future. The timing was wrong for Shawn and Camila.”
Reflecting on their relationship, Cabello revealed on the Call Me Daddy podcast that she went with her gut when she reconnected with Mendes. Although it didn't work out the second time because it "didn't feel right," Cabello said it was "a fun time," and she still appreciates Mendes.
"I will always care about him and love him," she explained on the audio show in March 2024. "He’s such a good person."
Austin Kevitch
After her initial split from Mendes in November 2021, Cabello started dating Kevitch.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the pair were first linked in June 2022 after being set up by mutual friends at the entrepreneur's request.
In August 2022, the couple were spotted holding hands while walking around L.A. They continued to show off PDA, with the pop star also kissing Kevitch on the cheek during an outing.
After eight months of dating, the two called it quits in February 2023. According to several outlets, Kevitch’s dating app sent out a newsletter to its subscribers and revealed, "Austin is single again."
The split was reportedly caused by busy work schedules, which were too difficult to balance with their relationship, per Entertainment Tonight.
