Canadian Cutie Alex Sampson Teases His Upcoming 'America's Got Talent' Performance With a New Release
Twenty-year-old Alex Sampson got four yeses following his America’s Got Talent audition of his original song “Pretty Baby,” and the even better news for the Canadian cutie is that he made it through the Judges Cuts to the Season 19 Live Shows.
“For me, I thought this song could have been written in the ‘50s or ‘60s, which I thought was really smart actually,” Simon Cowell told Alex. "It’s the kind of song you would hear in a Martin Scorsese movie in that era. It was very authentic. It was very different. If this is the lane you want to go down, I think it’s very smart because you separate yourself from what everybody else is doing. So, I really, really liked this audition.”

Alex will make his next AGT appearance on Tuesday, but in the meantime, he has released a new single, “If You Were My Girl” on Warner Records that is in keeping with the throwback vibe he demonstrated during his audition for Simon and his fellow judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara. Is it also a sneak peek at his next performance on the talent competition?
“‘If You Were My Girl’ is the second single from my forthcoming EP,” Alex says. “When creating this song, one of my friends was being treated poorly and I felt that if she was my girl, I would treat her better than that. I love this song so much and I think it’s a perfect follow up to ‘Pretty Baby.’”
The track channels ‘50s doo-wop with its breezy harmonies, bright piano, and loose guitar riff. The chorus soars, and emotions overflow as he pledges, “If you were my girl, I would never run away.” Alex practically hugs those last notes for dear life as the vocals echo to the heavens.
America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
