Canutillo's Victoria's Steakhouse expands with far East El Paso location

Victoria's Steakhouse and Mexican Grill, a well-known restaurant in Canutillo for about six years, has expanded with its first restaurant in El Paso.

The second location has recently opened at 14021 Pebble Hills Blvd., the former site of a Jamaican restaurant. The first restaurant is at 420 Talbot Ave.

The two restaurants share a chef in Freddy Marquez, 21, who still works at the Canutillo restaurant on Wednesdays and Thursdays to relieve other chefs. The restaurants are owned by his uncle and aunt, David Arzola and Cynthia Lopez.

"We're so excited to bring our flavor to this side of town and hope to be able to expand more," he said. "Our main philosophy is always having the best quality of beef. Our beef is Iowa premium."

The restaurant is known for its ribeye steaks, and arrachera, the elongated steak often showing up on foodie's Instagram accounts.

Indeed, the arrachera ($55), 14 ounces of skirt steak, is quite impressive as it makes its way to your table. The juicy, tender and flavorful steak is served on a board with a baked potato with bacon, grilled onions, sliced avocado, jalape?o, and lovely fresh greens with a vinaigrette dressing.

We ordered an appetizer thinking we wouldn't be able to share the arrachera, but good mistakes were made. After a few tasty bites of the Nachos Mexicanos ($15) ? chips with refried beans, melted cheese, jalape?os and tomato ? we decided to save them and take them home for another meal.

And we didn't realize the attentive waiter would bring each of us a sopita, or traditional Mexican vegetable soup with macaroni pasta, before our entrees, so it was a yummy start to a big, satisfying meal. There also are complimentary chips that are served with three salsas.

Victoria's Steakhouse and Mexican Grill offers two types of nachos: one with beef and one without. The chips are crispy and the cheese is Mexican, melting nicely on the nachos.

We also have to give kudos to the kitchen staff, who make time to create desserts like sugar-dusted churros with a drizzle of caramel and a dollop of whipped cream. If you have room, they are delicious.

The second location is small, but Marquez said it's an excellent way to introduce their concept to El Paso with the hopes of expanding. The restaurant menu is extensive, with various appetizers, Mexican plates, soups and salads. The stars on the menu, of course, are the steaks. They have a separate breakfast menu, so there are lots of reasons to come back.

Marquez said they are proud of their story, which began with his late grandmother, Rosa Emma Fong, who originally opened a Victoria's on Hondo Pass Drive and then later on Dyer Street. She wanted to name the restaurant after her uncle Victor, but there already was a restaurant with the same name, so she made it female.
