Carl Reiner’s HBO Doc ‘If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast’ Explores Life After 90
The 95-year-old comedian Carl Reiner made a HBO documentary titled If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast. Reiner based the film on his daily routine: “Every morning before having breakfast, I pick up my newspaper, get the obituaries section, and see if I’m listed. If I’m not, I’ll have my breakfast.” In the film he talked with celebrities over the age of 90 to learn how they have stayed happy and healthy.
Reiner visited with Dick Van Dyke, who is 91 years young and loving life. Van Dyke said, “A publisher asked me to write a book about growing old or how to grow old correctly or something, and I said, ‘It’ll be a thin volume, ‘Keep Moving’.”
And 94-year-old Stan Lee said he also likes to keep moving. In fact, he said, “I’m like a cowboy who wants to die with his boots on. I want to go in front of my computer while I’m typing something.”
Despite not being over 90, comedian Jerry Seinfeld also made an appearance and shared his three principles of living a happy life. He said, “One is bust your ass, whatever you’re doing, bust your ass. Work as hard as you possibly can. My second principle is pay attention. Pay attention to what’s around you all the time. Appreciate what’s around you all the time. And my third principle of life is fall in love.”
And while working hard seems to be the main ingredient in the long-life recipe, 95-year-old Jim “Pee Wee” Martin pointed out you can’t go wrong with sticking to the classics … “no tobacco, no alcohol, and lots of good sex.”
