Carrie Underwood after 'American Idol' mishap: 'Please don't kick me off the show'
Country music superstar Carrie Underwood stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday, where she reminisced with the host over her life-changing American Idol audition 15 years ago. Growing up in the small town of Checotah, Okla., the Grammy award-winning singer said she had minimal expectations and nothing to lose.
“I didn't know what was going to come of it. I saw the auditions on the news happening in other towns, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ Worked out all right,” said Underwood. In response, Colbert joked, “That was the shortest autobiography I've ever read.”
Underwood went on to explain that after receiving her golden ticket to Hollywood, she had to fly to Los Angeles by herself, which she said was “terrifying” because it was her first time flying. Although she still feels the same way about flying, despite doing it all the time now. Underwood told Colbert, “It still freaks me out, to be honest. I'm 36 years old and I have been to lots of airports.”
Underwood’s first time flying was extra stressful though, since she missed one of her connecting flights. Stuck in an airport all by herself, Underwood said she had to find a “nice airport employee” to help her, but the singer’s bigger concern was missing the chance to be on the show. She said, “I'm on the phone with whoever our contact person was and I was, like, ‘Please don't kick me off the show.’” But, luckily for Underwood, and all of her fans, she eventually made it to Hollywood and the rest is history.
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:30 p.m. on CBS.
