'Princess Bride' star says remaking the film 'would be a pity'
Remake The Princess Bride? Inconceivable!
So says actor Cary Elwes, who played swashbuckling heartthrob Westley in the beloved 1987 Rob Reiner film, which was adapted by William Goldman from his 1973 novel of the same name.
Elwes and countless fans of the cinematic fairy tale — including Jamie Lee Curtis, who happens to be married to actor Christopher Guest, a.k.a. Count Tyrone Rugen, the “six-fingered man” — are speaking out after Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra hinted at a potential reboot.
The Hollywood executive referenced the film in a Variety profile about Sony’s new deal with 97-year-old super-producer Norman Lear, who helped produce and fund The Princess Bride thanks in part to his past work with Reiner on All in the Family; the actor-turned-director played Archie Bunker’s hippie son-in-law “Meathead.”
“We have so many people coming to us saying, ‘We want to remake this show or that show,’” Vinciquerra said of Lear’s extensive body of work. “Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo The Princess Bride. Some people want to do animated versions of some of the sitcoms. Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things with [Lear].”
To be clear, a potential reboot of The Princess Bride — which also starred Robin Wright, André the Giant, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Wallace Shawn, Fred Savage, Peter Falk and Mandy Patinkin — remains just wishful thinking at this stage. But even the suggestion that the ‘80s classic would be touched has Elwes, Curtis and countless fans crying foul.
There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one. https://t.co/5N8Q3P2e5G

Oh really? Well, I married the six fingered man, obviously why we have stayed together for 35 years and there is only ONE The Princess Bride and it’s William Goldman and @robreiner’s. “Life is pain highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something!” https://t.co/hv33UIZKN3

Inconceivable! However I wouldn't mind a sequel! Bring everyone back! I wanna be fazinni jr! ?? https://t.co/DA60JZTztn

I will vote for the Presidential candidate who includes not remaking “The Princess Bride” as part of their platform.

Look, there is no point in remaking The Princess Bride. We already know what became of Buttercup. pic.twitter.com/6YgO5R9kG3

A) No. B) Calling it Norman Lear's The Princess Bride is as accurate as Al Ruddy's The Godfather—in that neither of them is creatively responsible for what you know and love. C) No. https://t.co/JsT2ISzvgf

I’m rarely a “don’t remake this” kind of guy, because I make an effort to be near-pathologically optimistic, and I try very hard to believe that there may be some genius version of a remake that I lack the vision to imagine.
All that said, don’t remake the Princess Bride. https://t.co/5LvQmoBe12— Franklin Leonard (@franklinleonard) September 17, 2019
As you wish

Surprisingly, one of the biggest critics of a proposed reboot is Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who has devoted multiple tweets to the movie he calls “the greatest thing in the world.”
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Sonny, The Princess Bride is the greatest thing, in the world—except for a nice MLT, mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They’re so perky, I love that. DON’T MESS WITH PERFECTION. https://t.co/A2lWFlq2yB

Inconceivable that anyone would even think to try... https://t.co/KxHY0UbIqJ

I have never agreed with a statement more. https://t.co/lUdC9EK6Wv

As you wish, Ted. As you wish.
