The Cast of ‘American Gods’ Explains Why Fans Shouldn’t Fear the TV Series

Gather round all ye American Gods disciples nervous about Bryan Fuller’s upcoming adaptation of the 2001 bestseller, which debuts April 30 on Starz. The book’s high priest, author Neil Gaiman, has a reassuring sermon for you. “The TV show loves the book as much as you do,” Gaiman tells Yahoo TV. “You are going to see some of the things that you loved best about the book on your screen.”

Those words are echoed by the rest of the Gods cast and crew, which includes Orlando Jones as the African arachnid deity Anansi and Kristin Chenoweth as the splendiferously dressed Easter. “Don’t be nervous, don’t be mad, don’t be scared,” Chenoweth says soothingly. “Trust me when I say, you won’t be disappointed.”

For those who aren’t already acquainted with this holy text, American Gods tells the story of Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a recently released ex-con who embarks on a road trip with the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). It quickly becomes clear that Shadow’s new employer has his roots in some very, very old mythology. The show’s first season will span the first 100 pages of the book, which leaves lots of revelations still to come in future years. “It’s a non-faithful faithful adaptation of the book that you love,” says McShane. Can we get an Amen?

American Gods premieres Sunday, Apr. 30 at 9 p.m. on Starz.
