Succession, What We Do in the Shadows, Euphoria, The Great and Normal People scooped some of the television trophies.

As for the boards, Jim Carnahan was a triple winner Thursday for casting the New York stage shows Little Shop of Horrors and A Soldier’s Play and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Regional Theatre – Play). Little Shop of Horrors and also was a double winner of sorts, with the casting directors for both the New York Los Angeles productions picking up trophies, the latter for Ryan Bernard Tymensky.

“Tonight’s Artios Award ceremony once again celebrated the enormous contributions that our members bring to a global entertainment community. We are extremely proud to congratulate this evening’s well-deserved winners and honorees,” said Russell Boast and Rich Mento, co-presidents of the Casting Society of America. “CSA is committed to working tirelessly to further the conversation of recognition for all of our craft’s work, and are proud of the collective achievements made in recent years.”

The effects of the pandemic and the issues of diversity and social justice were brought up several times during the Artios Awards. But the show opened with a humorous montage of actors including Billy Crystal, Ming-Na Wen, Daveed Diggs, Heather Graham, Tituss Burgess, Matt Bomer, Aaron Tveit and Michael Urie doing virtual “auditions” — many derailed by the kind of at-home disruptions like pets and filters that we’ve all gotten used to during the 13 months. The gag recurred throughout the ceremony.

The Artios Awards paid tribute to a pair of pioneering casting directors who died during the past year: Lynn Stalmaster, who in 2017 received the first Oscar given to a casting director, and Mike Fenton, a CSA founder whose hundreds of credits include Best Picture Oscar winners The Godfather Part II and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Read Fenton’s obituary here and Stalmaster’s here.

This year’s Hoyt Bowers Award honorees are Emmy winner Robi Reed, whose credits range from numerous Spike Lee films including Do the Right and Malcolm X to TV’s The Tuskegee Airmen and The Bobby Brown Story, and Tara Rubin, an eight-time Artios winner and 17-time nominee who specializes in live theater but also cast features including The Producers and the upcoming Here Today.

Rubin also picked up a pair awards tonight for casting Six (Regional Theatre – Musical) and The Band’s Visit (Regional Theatre).

Yara Shahidi presented the Rosalie Joseph Humanitarian Award to the Actors Fund, and Gianna Butler (Grown-ish) and Michael Rios (The Flight Attendant) are set to receive Associate Spotlight Awards.
