Cate Blanchett Plays Plead the Fifth With Andy Cohen

When non-reality stars go on Watch What Happens Live, I’m always amazed. Host Andy Cohen is the master of leading his guests through crazy games and even wilder questions. And Andy isn’t afraid to ask the questions that you secretly hope he will. So, when actresses Cate Blanchett and Gina Gershon stopped by the clubhouse, Andy asked one of the ladies to Plead the Fifth.

It was Cate Blanchett’s turn to play the game

Andy spun a wheel to see whether Cate or Gina would play Plead the Fifth. When Cate realized that it was her turn, she covered her face with her hair. She was just thrilled to once again answer some uncomfortable questions.

First, Andy asked, “I read that you were very concerned with getting your Lilith wig for your new movie Borderlands just right. In which of your past roles did you absolutely hate your wig?” She responded, “Umm … the role of Cate Blanchett.”

After telling her it was “fierce,” he moved on to the next question. “What film that you’ve done gave you the biggest paycheck?” Cate replied, “Oh my God.” So, Andy jumped in. “I’m assuming …,” he said before stopping. Cate urged him to give his response first. He stated, “I think it’s probably Lord of the Rings.”

Cate looked shocked. “Are you kidding me?” she remarked. “No. No one got paid anything to do that movie.” As you may recall, Cate played Galadriel, the elf queen, in Peter Jackson’s film. Naturally, Andy ignored the flashing “awkward” signs and continued. “Did you get a piece of the back end?”

She replied, “No! That was way before any of that. No. Nothing.” She continued, “I wanted to work with the guy who made Braindead. I mean I basically got free sandwiches. I got to keep my ears, which is something. They fed me.” Cate added, “Women don’t get paid as much as you think they do.”

Then Andy asked his final question. “You’ve worked opposite almost every leading man in Hollywood: Brad Pitt, Robert Redford, [George] Clooney, [Matt] Damon, [Alec] Baldwin, [Russell] Crowe, [Leonardo] DiCaprio, [Bruce] Willis, Rafe.” Cate quipped, “I think you’ve got co-star envy there.”

Andy admitted as much, before asking, “Which male co-star was the most high-maintenance to work with?” But Cate disappointed him. “Oh, I can’t,” she stated. “I’m going to Plead the Fifth.”
