Catherine O'Hara Met Her Husband on the Set of ‘Beetlejuice’ in 1987: Read About Their Love Story!
Much of the original Beetlejuice (1988) cast have reprised their roles in the highly anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). While a new cast of characters have joined the newest installment hitting theaters on September 6, including Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe, fans of the original can expect to see Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara back on the screen together — and it’s making us super nostalgic!
The film made its debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 28, and the cast came dressed to impress — but that isn’t all that caught our eye! Catherine O’Hara stunned in an Oscar de la Renta gown, but it was her date that put a smile on our face. O’Hara walked the red carpet alongside her husband, Bo Welch — who she met on the set of the original film!
How did Catherine O’Hara and Bo Welch meet?
Back in the original 1988 film, O’Hara brought to life the character of Delia Deetz. Delia was the stepmother to Winona Ryder’s character. An artist in the film, the role of Delia would pave the way for O’Hara’s later, celebrated roles, including that of Kevin’s mom in Home Alone (1990) and its sequel, her part Best in Show (2000) and later, as Moira in Schitt’s Creek.
However, her time as part of the 1988 horror-comedy is special, as it's where she met Welch, who was a production designer on the film. The actress recalled to ELLE Canada that she “actually wrote in a diary, ‘We’re supposed to get married someday, so I wish he would ask me out.’” And luckily, he did!
In a 2023 interview with Etalk, O’Hara revealed that Beetlejuice takes the cake as one of her most special films due to the fact that it’s where she met her husband. “[Director] Tim Burton made him ask me out,” she shared.
In a 2020 Q&A with TIFF, O’Hara revealed when she first started falling for Bo, “It was like high school. ‘Oh, he talked to me today! He talked to me for three minutes! He talked to me for seven minutes!’” she joked.
By 1992, the couple got married and are parents to two sons. Their marriage has stood the test of time since those early days of flirtation and anticipation, and the actress has been candid about how they make it work.
“My husband and I laugh about everything all day long,” she told ELLE Canada when talking about humor in her life. “That’s the best. Or if we get into a fight, we’ll actually make fun of each other to break the tension. It really helps.”
