CeCe Winans makes Grammy history with latest wins; most winning female in gospel

Already considered the best-selling female gospel artist of all time, CeCe Winans has another accolade to add to her title.

The vocal powerhouse added three more Grammy Awards Sunday to her collection – making her the female gospel artist with the most wins ever.

“To God be the glory! We are so humbled by this. Unbelievable. This is amazing. Thank you to everybody who played and sang on this album… This is why we’re here, because the songs were just amazing,” Winans excitedly said in a video posted to Instagram on Sunday aftr winning trophies for best gospel performance/song and best contemporary Christian music performance/song (“Never Lost”); and best gospel album for the recently-released “Believe For It.”

“And to everybody who was in the categories with us, we love you,” she added to her fellow nominees. “You know what, let’s keep building the kingdom.”

The 57-year-old Detroit native is now the first female artist to win the award twice since it began in 2012. Her 2018 opus “Let Them Fall In Love” beat out efforts from younger acts Travis Greene, Le’Andria, Marvin Sapp and Anita Wilson.

Winans’ male contemporary Kirk Franklin continues to rule the roost with the most Grammy Awards in the genre. He has 16.

Now she stands among the Grammy’s most-awarded women of all genres, in a three-way tie with Alicia Keys and Adele for fourth place.

Beyonce remains No. 1 with 28 gramophones, followed by Alison Krauss (with 27), and the late Aretha Franklin with 18 competitive wins.

Winans became a household name with her brother, BeBe Winans, in the late 1980s as the trailblazing contemporary, platinum selling gospel duo Bebe & CeCe.

The siblings will reunite for a VERZUZ TV performance on Easter Sunday, April 17, in a musical battle with Mary Mary, the Los Angeles-reared sibling duo who followed in their footsteps in crossover success.
