Celebrate 30 Years of Oprah With These Unforgettable Moments
It was 30 years ago today that The Oprah Winfrey Show premiered and launched a Chicago talk show host into the spotlight and set her on a path to becoming one of America’s most influential media moguls.
Named “Orpah” after a Biblical figure, her name was so often mispronounced that she changed it. Winfrey began her life in the impoverished rural South, ran away from home as a teenager, and eventually got a full ride to Tennessee State University, where she worked for a nearby radio station.
In Nashville, she became both the youngest and first black news anchor for WLAC-TV. She later moved to Chicago to host a morning talk show that would later become the legendary Oprah Winfrey Show. In 25 seasons and 4,561 episodes, Winfrey interviewed first families, movie stars, and… Trump.
Today, we’d like to celebrate Oprah with unforgettable moments from 25 years on the air, such as her wagon of fat, Tom Cruise’s overzealous couch jumping episode, an interview with a woman who has 92 distinct personalities, and that time Oprah chatted with Dr. Maya Angelou while lounging in her bed.
