Celebrity Parents on Teaching Their Kids to Drive: 'Can We Just Hold On a Second'
From Jodie Sweetin to Luke Bryan, these celebrity parents are opening up about watching their kids hit a major milestone
Buckle up: These celeb kids have hit the road!
For parents everywhere, watching your child take their first spin behind the wheel can be both exciting and nervewracking, and being a celebrity doesn't exempt you from logging those sweaty hours in the passenger seat next to their new driver. From Luke Bryan's son's tough start to Jessica Alba's daughter "driving like it's her job," these celebrity parents are opening up about watching their not-so-little one's big milestones.
Luke Bryan
Last summer, Luke Bryan shared that his then-15-year-old son Thomas "Bo" Boyer had received his learner's permit, meaning it was time for dad to help him learn how to navigate behind the wheel.
"He’s 15 so he’s doing the whole learner’s permit nightmare," Bryan shared while appearing on Audacy's Katie & Company. "He is not a very good driver right now, so we’re having to work with him pretty hard."
He added: "He’s very frustrated right now because he thinks he knows how to drive, but he has no idea what he’s doing. He thinks because he can operate a 4-wheeler or Polaris that he is quite proficient, but he is not, I assure you.”
Months later, the country singer said that Bo had "finally got it going" on the driving front.
"He's grown up on the farm driving side-by-sides and stuff like that. I just assumed that it would translate to being on the highway," he said. "It did not. But, hey, we got him rockin' and rollin', and now we're just trying to figure out what will be the first vehicle in his life."
Giada De Laurentiis
In August 2023, Giada De Laurentiis shared that her daughter, Jade, was learning to drive — a milestone the celebrity chef called "an emotional rollercoaster."
“It’s so stressful,” she told PEOPLE. “It's so emotional to watch your child grow up like this, and I feel like driving is such a big step.”
At the time, she shared that she realized it was only a matter of time until the new skill meant more independence from her mom.
“It won't be like, ‘Hey, mom. Can you drive me here? Hey, mom. Can I do this?’ It's more going to be like, ‘Hey, mom. I'm going to do this. I'll see you later,’ and I get left in the dust,” De Laurentiis said of her daughter, who she shares with ex Todd Thompson.
Carson Daly
Though in New York teens have to wait a little bit longer to get their licenses, Carson Daly shared earlier this year that his 15-year-old Jackson was getting started on his driver's education.
"My teenager is 15. He's starting to drive, so that's been kind of crazy," he told PEOPLE in April 2024. "I have a pickup truck, so he drives my truck. It's going great. He's a really good driver."
"We're just [doing] little stuff right now," he added. "He's got some time. Because in New York you don't get your license [until] you're 17, which is crazy to me!"
Jodie Sweetin
Earlier this year, it was time for Full House alum Jodie Sweetin to get in the passenger seat as her daughter, Zoie, learned to drive. To pay tribute to the big moment, the mom of two shared a photo from inside the car alongside a caption that recalled an iconic moment from the sitcom.
“This is me not at all worried while riding with Zo practicing her ‘neighborhood driving’ with her new Drivers Permit,” Sweetin wrote. “Actually … she was VERY good. As long as she never backs the car through the kitchen … we’re good.”
(For the uninitiated, the caption refers to the 1990 Full House episode where her character Stephanie Tanner drove Uncle Joey’s car into the kitchen.)
Kevin Hart
Back in 2021, Kevin Hart shared a glimpse into his daughter Heaven's latest milestone with a photo of her behind the wheel.
"My little girl is growing up....," he wrote at the time alongside the selfie from the passenger's seat.
Jessica Alba
During a recent sit down on the Today show, Jessica Alba shared that her eldest daughter, Honor, had hit the road with a "new driver's license."
"I was saying, she is literally driving like it's her job," Alba said, joking, "I'm like, 'Can we just hold on a second? Girl, you just got your driver's license. You don't have to drive all day and all night.'"
Heidi Klum
When Leni Klum was learning to drive in 2020, her supermodel mom documented the moment with a sunny, smiling selfie that might have belied what she was feeling inside. "Saturday driving with @leniklum ????," she wrote on Instagram.
