Channing Tatum and Zo? Kravitz Had 'No Ego' on “Blink Twice” Set, Simon Rex Says: 'Very Cool People' (Exclusive)
Tatum stars as tech billionaire Slater King in the thriller movie, which marks his fiancée Kravitz's directorial debut
For Simon Rex, watching Zo? Kravitz and Channing Tatum work together on the set of Blink Twice made an impression.
While chatting exclusively with PEOPLE at the movie's Los Angeles premiere at the DGA Theater on Thursday, Aug. 8, the 50-year-old actor said it was "interesting" to witness the pair's "dynamic" as Kravitz, 35, stepped into a director's role for the first time with Tatum, 44, leading the cast.
"They were so sweet together," Rex recalled. "It was interesting to watch that dynamic because it's like you're watching her be like, 'Hey babe, try this take like this, huh?' And he'd be like, 'Okay, babe.' And it was just like a couple talking about, 'Can you grab me that out of the fridge? Bring the ketchup.' 'Okay.' "
"And they would just coexist and flow, and it worked," he added of Kravitz and Tatum, who got engaged last year after two years of dating. "And no ego. They're both very cool people."
As for Kravitz's directorial debut, Rex praised the Big Little Lies star for being adept at guiding and communicating with the cast, which he credited to her background as an actor herself.
"She knows how to communicate and knows how to take care of us very, very well," he explained, before sharing his experience of seeing the final product for the first time. "I was pleasantly surprised in watching the movie. I know it went through a lot of different versions, but what I saw in the end had this tone, which to me, tone is one of the hardest things to get in a movie. And then she made a movie with a tone that was ... You're on the edge the whole time like, what the f---?"
He added, "And that's what I like. She did that. That's not easy to do."
While filming Blink Twice (formerly called Pussy Island), Rex also learned a lot from Tatum, who plays creepy tech billionaire Slater King in the thriller, which also stars Naomi Ackie, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment and Alia Shawkat.
"He's inspiring because he's somebody who's got ... he's a good-looking male lead, but he could be very funny. Man, I remember seeing him in 21 Jump Street and being like, 'Holy s---, he's funny.' He could do drama," Rex told PEOPLE of Tatum's versatility as a performer. "So I'm not surprised he could be the bad guy. Of course he can."

He said he's keen to see Tatum tackle other similarly dark roles. "I think I want to see more. I want to see him do it more," he noted.

At Thursday's premiere, Tatum told PEOPLE that getting to work with Kravitz was like "creating a marriage."
"It's one of those ... you truly are creating something from nothing and it's just like creating a marriage or creating something where you're like, everything that we are is going into this thing and you want to make it with people that you love," the Magic Mike star said.
"To get to create something with someone that you love is probably one of the most gratifying things other than having a kid with somebody I think," Tatum added.
For her part, Kravitz said the experience strengthened the pair's relationship. "I think going through something creative like this with anybody makes you closer and there's so much trust there," she told PEOPLE. "Yeah, we got to work together and go through hard things together and support each other, and it was beautiful,
