Charli XCX slammed for saying she felt like she performed for '5-year-olds' on Taylor Swift's tour
Charli XCX is facing backlash from Swifties after comparing Taylor Swift fans to “5-year-olds.” However, the musician is now clarifying that the quote was taken “out of context.”
The “Boom Clap” singer opened up for Swift on her highly successful Reputation tour and talked about the experience in a cover story for Pitchfork, published Tuesday.
“I’m really grateful that [Taylor] asked me on that tour,” Charli said. “But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.”
It made the 27-year-old singer decide to never open for anyone ever again. “I’ve done so much of it, and it really cemented my status as this underdog character, which I like now,” she added. “But I need to just own my own f***ing s*** finally.”
Naturally, many Swift fans were not pleased with the perceived dis.
So let me get this straight... Charli opens a global superstar's tour themed completely around false reputations and then later further contributes to the inaccurate narrative of said artists' reputation that all her fans are children... ok pic.twitter.com/l4fuqS7UVt

I’m actually so disappointed regarding the recent comment made by Charli XCX. I’ve been a fan of Charli’s for such a long time including seeing her way back on the Sucker tour before seeing her support Taylor’s rep tour. The comment is hurtful, unnecessary and incredibly false. pic.twitter.com/jlfuZgX3hr

well if 5 year olds are out here buying 1.29 million copies of reputation maybe 5 year olds are where it’s at, charli. pic.twitter.com/hdqpLdJyfA

But some cautioned fans not to react too harshly.
“I think Charli’s comment was really rude and s***ty, but please do not attack her lol,” one person wrote. “Calling her derogatory names or sending snake/rat emojis is so immature and is in fact acting like a 5 year old. Calling her out is different from a tantrum that’ll further embarrass Taylor.”
In a post on social media Tuesday afternoon, Charli clarified her remark and said she is “extremely grateful for the opportunity” she was given to perform on Swift’s tour.
