Charlie Sheen and Daniel Stern Revisit Their Baseball Movie Characters In Support of Rival World Series Squads

Following the Chicago Cubs’ 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians last night, the 2016 World Series is knotted at 1-1. Prior to the game, two familiar faces to baseball movie fans — Charlie Sheen and Daniel Stern — supplied each team with a little extra Hollywood-grade encouragement.

In a new video posted to Twitter yesterday afternoon (watch it above), Sheen called his character from 1989’s Major League, Indians relief pitcher Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn, out of the bullpen, standing in front of a projection of his fictional flamethrower’s memorable entrance in the film. It’s not quite the same as seeing Sheen throw out the first pitch at an actual World Series game — which the actor had expressed a desire to do — but his “Go Tribe” message nonetheless figures to give fans a lift.

The controversial actor’s fictional ties to the World Series team also led him to discuss Major League’s legacy with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Ryan Parker. “There are some people in and around baseball who think the excitement from the movie found its way into the actual Cleveland franchise,” Sheen boasts. “I don’t think that’s too far-fetched to say.” He also discusses another big-screen trip to the Major League ballpark. “The script that we’ve all been sitting on is pure gold and absolutely shootable,” Sheen says. “It’s David Ward [writer-director of the original Major League] at his best. I mean, this is the guy who won the Oscar for writing The Sting. We could be in preproduction tomorrow.” But Sheen also notes that Major League‘s rights-holder, Morgan Creek Productions, to this point has not been playing ball.

Meanwhile, actor Daniel Stern is (per Indiewire) continuing his own viral-video support of the Chicago Cubs, the Indians’ opponent and the team that employed his Rookie of the Year character, Phil Brickma. Coming on the heels of his earlier, pre-Series shorts, Stern debuted yet another new one yesterday, in which his Brickma expounds upon the “fundamentals of baseball” — culminating with some craziness involving farmland cows (watch it below, and see more 2016 Brickma clips at Daniel Stern’s YouTube page).
