Charlize Theron credits women at Fox News for launching #MeToo movement
Charlize Theron, who plays former Fox News host Megyn Kelly in the upcoming movie Bombshell, joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday night where she credited the women of Fox News for helping to usher in the #MeToo movement. Former Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against former Fox News president Roger Ailes in July of 2016, with dozens more current and former Ailes employees quickly following suit. This came more than a year before the explosive story in the New Yorker detailing multiple horrific allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
“In a weird way, it is the… the kind of…they were the catalyst that brought us to this place.” Theron said, later adding, “They’re the ones that kind of catapulted us into this moment where we’re really having a serious conversation about the nuance and the gray of sexual harassment.”
Carlson is unable to publicly tell her story because she signed a non-disclosure agreement as part of her multimillion dollar settlement with Fox, a common occurrence in sexual harassment cases that Theron would like to see stopped, and she’s happy that the movie can get the story out there.
“You kind of just go, ‘Why can this woman not tell her story? Why are we still putting all of these mechanisms in place that are still protecting predators and these men in power who are obviously abusing their power?’ I mean, that’s really what these NDAs are doing,” Theron said. “So I’m in complete support of her getting her voice back and having her story be told. But it is a cheeky way of us saying, ‘You still can’t silence us all.’”
Theron later added, “We have a lot of differences, but I ultimately...I have to acknowledge that what these women did was just incredible for this movement, and the more we hear these stories the better we are off not, kind of, getting into this complacency again.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
