“It definitely hadn't sunk in until we heard the baby's heartbeat,” remarks Bryant, 31, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE about the couple’s first child due this winter. “This all just gets crazier and crazier and better and better by the day.”

Granted, the actual journey to parenthood has come with its share of bumps in the road, including a piece of the road in which the couple became close to giving up on their dreams of becoming parents.

“We had been trying since we got married two years ago,” Bryant explains. “We had a miscarriage early on and obviously didn't tell a lot of people about that or anything. We just kept it to ourselves, so that was a difficult experience.”

In fact, it turned into a painful experience that resulted in Bryant looking at his 31-year-old wife in a whole new way. “I didn't really understand at the time just the amount of pressure [a miscarriage] puts on the female and also their body and their mind,” says the “Little Bit of You” hitmaker. “My place was just really to try to be comforting as a husband.”

Recently, the couple moved from Nashville, Tennessee to Charleston, South Carolina.

“When we moved, we kept trying and we obviously just prayed about it a lot,” recalls Bryant about the couple’s continued struggle to get pregnant. “We had the conversation that if it didn't happen that we were just going be the best godparents to somebody's kids or be the best aunt and uncles or so on and so forth. We would just try to baby someone else's kids as much as we could. I think we had really come to peace with the fact that it wasn’t going to happen.”

Nevertheless, Bryant says that it was around the very same time that he and Weber began getting some surreal signs that pointed to the fact that they shouldn’t lose the faith quite yet. “We have this fig tree in our yard, and it started fruiting, and then this banana tree started fruiting and just things that just didn't normally happen [to the prior owners of the home] began to happen with us,” remembers Bryant.

Shortly after, the two received the ultimate surprise, nearly 13 months after Weber’s miscarriage. “I was out on the road and came home from the airport to a clothesline set up in our yard, and [Weber] had put baby clothes on it,” Bryant joyfully remembers. “That was a pretty surreal moment for sure.”

And it’s been surreal ever since.

“Everything else in my life is second now,” he says. “I never really understood the amount of gratitude that I had towards Selena. But now seeing her as a mother and seeing myself as a dad, there's a lot of things in my life that I wish didn't necessarily happen the way they did, but I thank God that they did.”

Certainly, Bryant has struggled with dark times throughout his life, including a suicide attempt in 2018. “I'm sure my daughter or son will see my story at some point,” explains Bryant, who will release his new EP Cayo del Grullo next month.

“There was a time when I was still hurting and looking and searching. But Selena saved my life and she just keeps saving me. She just keeps delivering these messages and delivering all these things to me that just keep making life better.”

Bryant is also taking the time to make sure he is at his healthiest once the baby arrives.

“It's been a big change in my mental game,” says Bryant of the impending birth of his first child. “It's just taught me to really slow down and take my physical health and my mental health more seriously so that I can be around and see as many days as I could ever hope for.”

But for now, Bryant cares about catering to the mother-to-be.

“My gig has just been cutting the grass and making a paycheck and cooking food,” Bryant says with a laugh. “And if she wants donuts, we get donuts.”
