When we think of Cher, her iconic voice singing her hits like “Believe” or “If I Could Turn Back Time” immediately start playing in our heads. But, according to the singer, however, she doesn’t think of her songs as lovingly as we do.

As it turns out, according to a new interview of hers for Paper magazine, there’s one major thing she doesn’t like about her music: her voice. “I just never liked my voice that much,” she told the outlet, after saying that she’s “not a Cher fan.” “If I had my choice, I probably would have another one, but I didn’t get my choice. I got my mother’s voice.”

As she continued, Cher explained why her voice, for her, isn’t the best. “I don’t know, it’s weird. It doesn’t sound like a man, it doesn’t sound like a woman,” she said. “I’m somewhere more in-between. I have this strange style. I do what you do when you can’t hold a note: I don’t pronounce my Rs. I guess some consonants are hard to sing, so I just gotta leave them open.”

Most of all, however, Cher seems to be happy that other people enjoy her voice, even though she can’t say the same. “People seem to like it and I’m happy as a clam, but I wouldn’t have picked it,” she continued. “I liked it on my mother and it’s definitely my mom’s voice. My mom’s is softer, mine is edgier — different, but the same, but I don’t think I would have picked it.” If it’s any reassurance, we would’ve loved her singing chops!

Recently, the singer recently her first-ever Christmas album, titled Christmas, a milestone she thought she’d never do. “The reason I didn’t do one was because I couldn’t figure out a way to do one,” the Grammy winner confessed. “I couldn’t feel the way to make a Christmas album come from me, and then Sarah [Hudson] gave me [the single “DJ Play A Christmas Song”] and I thought, ‘Okay, I could do this.'” Although she might not agree, it’ll undoubtedly be another hit!
