To say that Chicago Med’s Dr. Charles and Dr. Sarah Reese didn’t part on good terms is putting it mildly, but that’s how the former doc describes their falling out in Wednesday’s fall finale when his former protégé resurfaces.

Sarah shows up at the hospital when one of her patients is brought in for a possible overdose, but full-blown psychiatrist Dr. Reese assures her it’s a panic attack. Archer picks up on the history between Sarah and Charles, who vaguely mentions their past, but also adds that Sarah is “so talented.” Archer asks if it was “a May-December thing.” (We’re not talking about you and Hannah, Dean.)

“No, Dean, it was a people thing,” Charles replies.

Sarah’s now in private practice, with a holistic approach, and she’s adamant that her patient, Ariel, didn’t overdose since, unbeknownst to the young woman, she’s been getting a placebo, not an antidepressant. Charles mentions the ethical implications of giving a placebo to a depressed, suicidal patient. Sarah says that she knows what she’s doing — after all, she had a good teacher — and she’d like Charles to discharge Ariel.

Turns out Ariel did take an entire bottle of Aspirin before she met Sarah, so Charles puts her on 72-hour hold, which angers Sarah. Charles accuses her of losing all objectively again and refuses to release Ariel into her “disturbingly questionable care.” Sarah calls him an “arrogant son of a bitch” who could never fathom that he might possibly be wrong, which is the real reason she left Gaffney. And now she’s leaving again, because Charles tells her to “get the hell out” of his unit.

— Archer is surprisingly OK — or at least pretending to be — about Lenox being in charge, even telling her that he’ll make sure the other doctors respect her authority. But it’s all just an act, because Archer is planning to turn in his resignation letter. With his romantic relationship over and his son moved, Archer doesn’t see a reason to stay around, he tells Hannah, who’s irked that he’s dismissing her in his decision. Archer wavers outside Goodwin’s office, where she’s bleeding out, then finally slips the letter under her door.

Meanwhile, Goodwin takes the distraction as an opportunity to knock out her attacker and flee into the hallway. Archer spots her just as he gets in the elevator, with the other woman coming up behind Goodwin, knife in hand.

— Lenox’s brother Kip shows up at the hospital, and let’s just say these siblings do not get along. They come back together at their parents’ graves, where Kip says he can’t forgive their father.
