Chicago Med left fans shaken and wondering what was next for heartthrob Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell) after the Season 9 cliffhanger saw him accused of assault against a patient with a baseball bat. While Ripley has denied the allegations of violence, his love interest, Dr. Hannah Asher, (Jessy Schram) hasn’t made up her mind about him amid their nascent romance.

As fans wait with anticipation for the Season 10 premiere on September 25, Schram teased her character’s reeling reaction to Ripley’s assault allegations and confirmed there will be a time jump between Season 9 and 10 that will immediately reveal what happened between Ripley and Asher in the aftermath of his legal troubles.

“She’s very unsettled, very confused,” Schram told TV Insider during the Television Critics Association summer press tour in July. She added that, although Asher will still be struggling to get her bearings, “we will answer a lot of the questions [raised by that cliffhanger]. I think we’ll be coming [back] a month after that happened.”

After a considerable leap forward in time, Schram admitted that the ED staff at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center will still be in considerable chaos from the Ripley twist. “There will still be more confusion, but we’ll see how it affects them, how much she’ll get to know from it, how much he’s going to hide, and how that affects the emergency department in general,” she said.

The actress further explained that, while the emergency department at Gaffney is still a “family,” it’s a dysfunctional one going into Season 10 as they navigate their relationships. “The family aspect will be there. They all love each other, but it’s very dysfunctional,” Schram divulged to TV Insider.

“So we’ll be playing a lot on the dysfunction of the family, I guess you could say,” the actress continued. Still, she promises, it’ll be a fresh take with new faces in the ED. “There will be some new characters coming in, and of course that stirs up many different characters for different reasons. But there’ll be some new energy, and it’ll be different from what we’ve seen in the past for sure.”

One character who will be missing from the ED when Chicago Med returns, however, is Dr. Crockett Marcel, played by Dominic Rains, who announced his exit from the series in June after five seasons. Given the time jump, it’s likely that Crockett’s exit will happen off screen. While it’s unclear how Chicago Med will write him off, the Season 9 finale saw him contemplating his surgical career after the death of a young boy and the patient’s father. Along with Rains, longtime showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider also confirmed their departures in April.
