Chopard Launches a New Ice Cube High Jewelry Collection
Fresh on the heels of last week’s announcement that Chopard had tapped Bella Hadid to be the face of its latest Ice Cube campaign, the Swiss maison celebrated with a dinner party in downtown Manhattan over the weekend. The venue: the two-Michelin-starred Saga, perched sky-high above the Financial District (63 stories, to be exact), whose panoramic views of the evening cityscape turned out to be a perfect metaphor for the Ice Cube jewels on display.
First dreamt up in 1999 by creative mastermind Caroline Scheufele—Chopard’s co-president and artistic director—the collection, true to its name, takes its design inspiration from frozen blocks of ice. But look closer and you’ll also see hints of Bauhaus architecture. That is particularly apparent in the pieces in the new Ice Cube high jewelry capsule, as modeled by Hadid in the new ‘Sculpted by Light’ campaign (which was shot by British photographer Charlotte Wales): See how the multistrand choker and cuff, crafted in ethically sourced 18k rose gold and studded with diamonds, bear striking resemblance to Manhattan’s geometric skyscrapers lit up at night?
Sharply angular and yet supremely flexible (each cube in the high jewelry choker and cuff is crafted by hand so that no two are alike), deceptively minimalist and unapologetically modern, these are jewels made for our times. So is the brand’s decision to enlist the 27-year-old Hadid as its latest global ambassador, a move undoubtedly meant to introduce the 164-year-old Chopard to a new generation.
This much was evident at Sunday’s fête at Saga, which was co-hosted by Chopard USA CEO Jean-Baptiste Maillard and Highsnobiety founder David Fischer. While Hadid herself wasn’t able to make an appearance, perhaps more importantly, the Ice Cube jewels (as well as others) certainly did.
