Chord Overstreet Reaches Out to ‘Anybody That’s Struggling’ With Touching New Single ‘Hold On’

For some artists, segueing from screen to music can be a daunting experience — but for Glee’s Chord Overstreet, it comes naturally.

“I kind of grew up doing music and so that’s what I did,” Overstreet tells Billboard. “And not a lot of people know that, so I think that if I can slowly start to put stuff out there and show them I write and create my own stuff and this is who I am.”

Growing up as the son of renowned country singer/songwriter Paul Overstreet, music may be in Overstreet’s genes, but it’s much more than just that.

“I have a blast doing it. It’s one of the most thrilling experiences you can ever have,” he says. “I think if you can affect somebody’s life with one song, that’s such a powerful tool to reach millions of people on so many different levels.”

For his latest single “Hold On” — a beautiful piano and acoustic-driven ballad — Overstreet delves into the topic of suicide with grace.

“I was going through a lot in a tumultuous relationship at the time and had lost somebody close to me,” Overstreet explains. “And I thought, ‘What would happen if that happened to the person I was not in a relationship with anymore but still really loved?’ I wrote the song from that perspective. Even if the worst thing happened, I would still do anything to be back with that person.”

As existing fans and new listeners hear the song, Overstreet only has one hope in mind. “Anybody that’s struggling with a hard time,” says Overstreet, “I hope they hear the song and know that somebody loves them out there.”
