Chris Christie on Trump calling Russia tampering a hoax: 'It's dangerous because he's wrong about it'
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert live following the Democratic debate Tuesday night where the former Republican presidential candidate weighed in on President Trump’s refusal to accept that Russia meddled in the 2016 election on his behalf, despite the entire intelligence community agreeing that’s what occurred.
When asked if he thinks Trump calling Russian tampering a hoax is dangerous, Christie replied, “It’s dangerous because he’s wrong about it.”
And Christie got into why he believes Trump refuses to believe his own intelligence agencies.
“He’s sensitive about the fact that he thinks that makes his election less valid, and he wants to push back against that,” Christie said. “So that’s why he does it. In my opinion, that’s why he does it.”
Christie then walked back his earlier assertion that Trump calling Russian meddling a hoax is dangerous, though his reasoning is up for debate.
“I don’t think it’s dangerous,” Christie said, “because I don’t think anybody takes that seriously.”
Intelligence officials recently warned that Russia is meddling in the 2020 election in an effort to help Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and though Trump is once again refuting the information, calling it a Democrat hoax, it sounds like Christie will be on the side of intelligence.
“Listen,” Christie said, “I believe the 17 different intelligence agencies that say that it actually happened.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
