Chris Cuomo's wife reveals 14-year-old son has COVID-19: 'This virus does not discriminate'
Chris Cuomo's teenage son has the coronavirus, three weeks after the CNN anchor publicly revealed his diagnosis. Chris's wife Cristina, who also tested positive for COVID-19, shared the news Wednesday on Instagram.
"This virus has created a different version of me. My hope is to be stronger, healthier, smarter about the virus at large," she wrote. "After 10 days of ups and downs, feeling good one-day and terrible the next, I am now working hard to get my son, Mario, through the virus."
Chris and Cristina are parents to Bella, 17, Mario, 14, and Carolina, 11.
"My heart hurts more than my head over his infection. This virus does not discriminate," Cristina continued. "While kids are more resilient, they can suffer same severity of symptoms."
Cristina, who is the CEO and founder or the wellness website the Purist, said she's treating her son with "a focus on lots of vitamins" and healthy meals.
"Since his sense of smell and taste have disappeared, I am feeding him healthy foods that I normally can’t get him to touch," she noted.
Cristina has shared her COVID-19 journey on social media.
"You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice," she wrote last week. "A seemingly sinus-related infection was my first symptom. But the only frustrating part is I can’t be there for my kids right now in the way they need me as Chris is in isolation too still, no fever and feeling better."
Cristina said their daughter Bella "stepped up cleaning, doing laundry, cooking for her siblings and getting them situated with google classroom, and caregiving her mother and father." She called Mario his sister’s "assistant," so his symptoms must have started recently.
While Cristina spent a week in isolation, Chris reunited with his family Monday — three weeks after quarantining himself in the basement.
"We’re still taking it slow. We’re not all hugging up and kissing and all that stuff," Chris shared with colleague Anderson Cooper. "But the kids, back in the picture. We’re figuring out our family gesture. We may go like this [makes hand gesture], or something like that. A little air kiss. But this is what I’ve been dreaming weeks for."
Later Monday on his show Cuomo Prime Time, Chris told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta it "rocked" the family when Cristina was diagnosed with the coronavirus.
"It really rocked us when Cristina got a case. Albeit much more mild than mine, and I think she’s just stronger than I am," he said. "But the missus going down took a toll on us. It spooked the kids. And there’s a little bit of a trauma and a recovery process that we’re gonna have to go through, as you see families all having."
