Chris Hemsworth Diet Revealed: How Actor Got Shredded for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Chris Hemsworth is arguably the most chiseled actor in Hollywood, but his role in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga demanded a drastic change in his training.
As Dementus, the unhinged leader of a murderous biker gang, Hemsworth shedded the pounds and adopted a restricted diet. According to his long-time fitness trainer Luke Zocchi, that diet required him to cut his calorie intake in half.
“He was only eating three meals a day and they would have been 800 calories a meal, not even. So it was probably half the amount of food that he was eating on Thor.” In addition, the pair “were doing intermittent fasting, and he wasn't eating nearly as much food as if he was doing a role like Thor.”
By contrast, to play Marvel’s God of Thunder, Hemsworth put on a serious bulk by consuming a massive 4,500 calories. “On the last Thor,” says Zocchi, “he was aiming for ten meals a day and each meal was like 450 calories. And I would come in the hair and make-up at 5.30am, I'd bring him his first meal and I'd set a clock and I'd literally be bringing him a meal every two hours. And when he got sick of food he would cycle on to a protein shake and then go back to solids.”
The reason for Hemsworth’s calorie cut on Furiosa? To portray the wasteland’s scarcity. “He wanted to look a lot leaner because it's Armageddon,” says Zocchi. ”With not much of anything around to consume, not least of all protein shakes, it makes sense Dementus wouldn’t have much fat on his bones. Add to that a serious lack of water, and you result in a shredded Hemsworth.
Surprisingly, Hemsworth’s body transformations don’t require working out 24/7. “Where he's in peak physical condition, we honestly are only training weights once a day. We might cycle in some cardio towards the end, but we don't train as long as what people think. I think people see Chris and think, ‘oh, he must spend three hours in the gym every day.’ For all the Thor we would probably train for like an hour, but that was an intense hour.”
His daily regime for Furiosa was even less, with sessions lasting “for like 40 minutes, 45 minutes.” Hemsworth and Zocchi used fitness app Centr to tailor their workouts, relying on circuit style training and short rests. Specifically, there's one regime on there called Power Shred that's specifically inspired by the one Hemsworth did to prep for his role as Dementus.
So, as long as you’re willing to switch up your diet and, if possible, grow a massive beard and ride around the desert with a cape, you too can possibly look like Chris Hemsworth.
