Chris McNally Has a New Update on the Future of 'When Calls the Heart' Season 12

As the season opened up with Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) recovering from being shot, Rosemary Coulter (Pascale Hutton) and Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) were on the case to find the culprit. Turns out they not only found who tried to kill Lucas, but it ended up being someone close to him in the past.

And as the season wrapped up with a wedding between Mike Hickam (Ben Rosenbaum) and Mei Sou (Amanda Wong), there's a lot more in store for the folks living in this quaint town... including a cliffhanger involving Elizabeth finding out unforeseen new details about her late husband Jack (Daniel Lissing).

Is When Calls the Heart coming back for season 12?
When Calls the Heart fans got an exciting surprise when Hallmark revealed the drama got renewed for season 12. Entertainment Tonight was the first to report the news in early May, with the new season gearing up to film a 12-episode installment starting in the summer of 2024. What's more, the show later confirmed the announcement with a post on Instagram.
"TWELVE! Can you believe it, #Hearties?!" read the caption on May 10. "Quick, name twelve things you love about this show! ??."
What's more, actress Erin Krakow (who also serves as an executive producer) shared an official statement with the outlet about When Calls the Heart scoring a season 12 renewal.
"I am overjoyed that When Calls the Heart is coming back for a 12th season!" she said at the time. "Our fantastic writers, cast, and crew couldn’t be more excited to begin filming this next season!... Having the Hearties’ support over the past decade has been a true testament to what this show is all about: community and love. We cannot wait for our fans to see what Hope Valley has in store!"

"I feel so grateful to have been sitting around laughing with this cast and crew for the past 11 seasons and I can’t wait to get back and do it again! Shortly after the season 11 finale aired on Hallmark on June 23, Chris McNally dropped a surprise update on X (formerly Twitter) about When Calls the Heart season 12. The post alluded to the fact that the all-new season will start filming over the summer.

What will When Calls the Heart season 12 be about?
Although it's unclear what adventures will happen next in Hope Valley, fans may get to see Elizabeth and Nathan finally embark on a romance that was years in the making.
After finally sharing their first kiss in the penultimate episode of season 11, Erin explained to Entertainment Tonight how Elizabeth and Nathan need to figure out one particular element that the two face on an every day basis.
"We've got to tell the kids," Erin joked, referencing Elizabeth's son Jack (Hyland Goodrich) and Nathan's adopted daughter Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller). "I think that they want to make sure they have approached the kids and talked it through first before they are making any kind of PDA. Elizabeth also wants to have a conversation with Lucas to make sure he doesn't feel disrespected by a sudden display of affection between Elizabeth and Nathan."
In the same interview, Kevin McGarry added how now that Elizabeth and Nathan's romance is happening, fans will be able to watch the two's love blossom more than ever before.
"What's so great about the relationship that Nathan and Elizabeth have had is a lot of it has been built on this strong foundation of friendship and support and this idea to help others," he added. "On top of the new romance, [that's] going to be a big part of season 12. We're going to see them combining their strength to move forward."
