Chris Pine Doesn’t ‘Know Anything’ About Returning for ‘Princess Diaries 3’
Chris Pine is as curious about “Princess Diaries 3” as the rest of us.
The actor, who co-led the 2004 franchise sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” said during “Today With Hoda & Jenna” that he has not been contacted about returning for the upcoming third film.

“Princess Diaries 3” was confirmed by Disney in 2022. Flora Greeson is writing the script, with “Joy Ride” filmmaker and “Crazy Rich Asians” co-screenwriter Adele Lim directing.
“I don’t know anything,” Pine said. “Call Disney! Call [Disney CEO] Bob Iger!”
He added, “The answer is, I’ve got to see. I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”
Pine played Nicholas, who was part of an enemies to lovers storyline with Anne Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis. The sequel ended with their marriage. The third film will serve as a continuation of the original film series, which began in 2001 and was based on Meg Cabot’s novel series. The rumored plot for a third installment has long been that Mia now has to teach her own teen daughter how to behave like a princess; however, no casting announcements have been made yet if Hathaway will reprise her role.
Pine similarly said during Entertainment Weekly’s Role Call Youtube series that it would be “fucking fire” if “Princess Diaries 3” would be “like a Luca Guadagnino film.” Guadagnino recently helmed both “Challengers” and “Queer.”
“‘Princess Diaries 3,’ where is it?’ Have you been reading my diary?” Pine quipped when revisiting his past roles in the video, before adding of joining the trilogy installment, “I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything about it.”
Fellow former “Princess Diaries” star Mandy Moore told IndieWire that she “would be down” to be part of the “Princess Diaries 3” ensemble, despite only appearing in the first film.
“I mean, I also understand that, like, it’s hard to think of how my character would be a part of the story now, unless it were some sort of redemption,” Moore said. “Like, she, I don’t know, sort of turned over a new leaf and she’s a kind person who volunteers, like, walking foster puppies or something. There definitely needs to be that element in the story, but it would be so fun to be involved.”
