Christina Applegate declined ‘RHOBH’ offer: Producer said I’d be ‘boring’
Sorry, Andy.
Television veteran and Emmy winner Christina Applegate was once asked to star in “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” — but declined the role.
“I was asked to be a Housewife for ‘Beverly Hills,’ ” Applegate, 52, told her “MeSsy” podcast co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler on Tuesday. “They asked me to be one probably … 10 years ago, I would say?”
The “Married … With Children” alum said she turned down the spot on the highly successful show because she felt that she wouldn’t bring enough of the drama that was required.
“I wouldn’t have shown up for any dinners. I would’ve been in my sweatpants,” she jokes. “I would be laying in bed. What fun is that? None. I would be the worst Housewife anyway.”
She added: “I ended up becoming really good friends with the executive producer of [‘RHOBH’] because our kids went to school together.”
After a few months of getting to know the producer, Applegate turned to him one day and asked: “‘Now that you know me, would I have been a fun Housewife?’ He’s like, ‘No, it would’ve been the most boring s – – t I’ve ever seen in my life.’ ”
Nevertheless, the “Dead to Me” actress has been a fan of the ever-expanding franchise and even took to social media to complain about “Real Housewives of Potomac” star Robyn Dixon being fired from the cast and tagged executive producer Andy Cohen.
“What in the actual f – – k,” she recently wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Why is Robin Dixon not coming back to Real Housewives of Potomac???? Noooooo!!!!! @Andy you need to explain this to me. She is my fave housewife of all the franchises! @Andy call me now! You don’t have my number but ya know. I love you.”
Applegate — who started the podcast with Sigler, 42, to share their experiences with multiple sclerosis — recently revealed that she suffered a relapse, making it difficult to take care of her personal hygiene.
“I’m gonna be honest with you, I need to buy stock in Cottonelle because I haven’t taken a shower in three weeks,” Applegate told Sigler. “I can’t stand in my shower. There’s no f – – king way.”
“I have such a small bench and my ass is so huge these days that I can’t sit on it, it’s like I slip right off of it … So, I’ve been Cottonelle-ing my body,” she added.
The “Anchorman” star added that the experience has been “awful.”
“Thank God I’m always alone so that no one smells me,” she said.
Applegate announced her MS diagnosis in 2021, and has largely remained out of the public eye while dealing with her condition.
She made a rare appearance at the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she presented the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series to Ayo Edebiri for her performance in “The Bear.”
In an interview with “Good Morning America,” Applegate said that she “blacked out” during the experience.
“People said, ‘Oh, you were so funny,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t even know what I said. I don’t know what I was doing,’ ” she told anchor Robin Roberts.
“I got so freaked out that I didn’t even know what was happening anymore,” Applegate continued. “And I felt really beloved, and it was a beautiful thing.”
She quipped: “I probably shouldn’t say this: That audience stood up for everybody.”
