Christina Hall says she and Heather El Moussa came up with cheeky promos for new house flipping show: 'People always say' that 'Tarek has a type'
The "Christina on the Coast" star says she and husband Josh Hall are "definitely" on friendly terms with her ex-husband Tarek El Moussa and his new wife.
Fans were shocked when Christina Hall and ex-husband Tarek El Moussa announced they were teaming up for the new HGTV show The Flip Off... with their respective spouses, Josh Hall and Heather Rae El Moussa, no less. But Christina tells Yahoo Entertainment the competition show makes sense now that they are all "definitely" on friendly terms.
"It kind of started for a variety of reasons, but I had flipped houses for a long time, took a break and then Josh and I started flipping houses in Tennessee and I really enjoyed it," she told Yahoo Entertainment while promoting Christina on the Coast, which returns to HGTV on Thursday.
Christina, 41, and Tarek, 42, flipped houses on Flip or Flop for more than a decade. Even though they split in 2016, they continued to work together until the series ended in 2022. Christina, who tied the knot with husband Josh that same year, explains the two started discussing "what it would look like to bring a flipping show back."
"When speaking with the network, they were telling me competition shows are doing so well right now. And so then I kinda started the idea in my head: what would that look like? Josh and I spoke to Tarek and Heather about it and they were in, and so we approached the network with this idea and they were like '100 percent,'" she continued. "And so here we are."
Christina, Heather and Tarek have captured headlines for their cheeky promos for The Flip Off, set to debut in early 2025, some of which spoof their past reported tension. Christina broke down how they came up with the creative ideas.
"My [promo] ideas were just kinda like — in talking with Heather, something that people always say is 'Oh, they look so much alike and Tarek has a type,'" Christina said. "So our whole joke [was to] play on that, just taking things that people say about us and just kind of like throwing it back in a joking way."
Christina laughs that "some of the weirder" videos "are not my idea."
For now, viewers can catch the designer on Christina on the Coast where she updates properties in Southern California. When the fifth season premieres, fans will see the designer update her childhood home.
"That's definitely probably my favorite episode this season," Christina says, calling the experience "super fun" despite being nervous to take on her parents as clients. "We have very different tastes. They're much more traditional and I was a bit worried about it, but it was surprisingly very, very easy."
Christina on the Coast premieres July 11 on HGTV.
