Christine Baranski Confirms ‘Mamma Mia 3’ Is in the Works
Mamma Mia is up there in our personal hall of fame for Best. Films. Ever. And it’s good news, as a third Mamma Mia film *could* actually be happening!
The first two movies—Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, released in 2008 and 2018 respectively—are now certified modern classics. And we’ve got a whole renewed love for ABBA as a result!
If you’re in need of a recap, the first movie tells the love story of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and Sky (Dominic Cooper), as Sophie delves into her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) past in a bid to find her real father—who could be Bill (Stellan Skarsg?rd), Sam (Pierce Brosnan), or Harry (Colin Firth).
The second film, Here We Go Again!, revisits Sophie and her family five years later when she discovers she’s pregnant. She then delves into the history of how Donna got pregnant all those years before her, hoping to connect to her mother’s pregnancy journey in the same hotel in Greece.
So, it’s no surprise that fans are still after a third film. I mean, there’s *so* much potential for the plot, from us meeting Sophie’s child to a final DNA test for Sophie and her dads.
Here’s everything we know about Mamma Mia 3 so far.
Has Mamma Mia 3 been confirmed?
There’s no official confirmation just yet. However, Mamma Mia’s original production team has spoken out about a potential third film, and it all sounds promising!
Most recently, Christine Baranski, who plays the iconic Tanya, gave a very exciting update about the next movie.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Christine revealed she’d had dinner with the movie’s creator Judy Kramer and things are in the works...like, there’s a proposed story already!
“I was in London with [producer] Judy Kramer at our favorite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia 3. She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Kramer to get everybody back together,” she revealed.
As for where they’ll be filming? “We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast. I hope,” Christine said.
And in 2022, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! writer and director Ol Parker shared an exciting update with ScreenRant, revealing that the franchise’s producer has a “plan.” Intriguing.
He explained, “Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always [planned] for it to be a trilogy. That's all I can say.”
Parker went on, “The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn't it be lovely?”
Very lovely if you ask us!
Back in 2020, Judy Craymer herself opened up about the prospect of Mamma Mia 3 in an interview with the Daily Mail. She revealed at the time, “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months [during lockdown]. But then I got hit with Covid fog.”
“I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see,” Craymer continued, adding, “I know Universal would like me to do it."
So, sounds hopeful all round!
What has the cast said about Mamma Mia 3?
Unsurprisingly, it sounds like the Mamma Mia cast is just as keen for a third film as we are. Speaking on whether she’d be down for a sequel, Amanda Seyfried told the Radio Times, “Oh yeah! Beyond yes.”
Lily James (young Donna) continued, “We laughed that it could be Mamma Mia! The DNA Test. You finally find out who the dad is,” while Christine Baranski (Tanya) added, “We’re ready for the next sequel because it’s just so much fun to do.”
Pierce Brosnan, for his part, commented, “We better make it soon, I think.”
Producer Judy Cramer also previously told ET of a follow-up, “We don’t want to be too old. I think we’ll just dream about it for a bit. It’s fun to think about it. What would we call it—Fernando?”
Who might star in Mamma Mia 3?
If Mamma Mia 3 goes ahead, we’ll be expecting all of our favorite cast members from the first two films to appear. So, that’s:
Meryl Streep as Donna Sheridan
Amanda Seyfried as Sophie Sheridan
Pierce Brosnan as Sam Carmichael
Colin Firth as Harry Bright
Stellan Skarsg?rd as Bill Anderson
Dominic Cooper as Sky Rymand
Julie Walters as Rosie Mulligan
Christine Baranski as Tanya Chesham-Leigh
There are also the actors who play the younger characters in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! They include Lily James as young Donna and Cher as Ruby Sheridan, Donna’s mother.
When might Mamma Mia 3 be released?
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation before getting a release date for Mamma Mia 3. Argh! In the meantime, we'll be rewatching the first two films indefinitely.
We're so ready!
