The couple started to date and made it work with their busy schedules. “We were both really busy, so whenever we saw each other, we were exhausted,” Lisa told PEOPLE. But things got more serious in August 1991 when Clint visited her on the set of her TV movie The Return of Eliot Ness.
“He had four days off, and so did I, and they were the same four days,” Lisa shared. “It was like somebody was watching from above and saying, ‘Y’all need to be together.’ ”
Clint proposed to Lisa in September 1991
Clint shared with PEOPLE that he popped the question to Lisa on a Salt Lake City college running track where he was getting in a preshow workout.
“We started talking about life and how much we meant to each other,” Lisa shared. “It was probably an endorphin high or something, but lie asked me to marry him, and I said yes.”
They married in October 1991
Lisa and Clint married exactly 10 months and 20 days after they first met, according to Country Living. They married on Clint’s 180-acre farm in Texas.
Lisa told the publication, "Once I met him and got to know him and then started learning about his music and all of that, and his poetry, I had to kind of forget about it when I was around him," she has said. "I'd find myself looking at him going, 'You write all that stuff? Where does it come from?' "
And Clint knew she was "the one." He said, "I knew intuitively that she could be trusted with my heart and my life."
They have one daughter, Lily Pearl Black
The couple have one daughter, Lily Pearl Black. The couple shared with PEOPLE that Lily was born 10 years after they married, and both Lisa and Clint took a step back from their careers.
"I remember seeing an interview with Billy Joel talking about what he missed being gone and the decision he made," Clint told PEOPLE, "and he used the phrase, 'I didn't want to be Uncle Daddy,' and that really had an impact on me."
Like her famous parents, she also has musical talent and studied music at Belmont University. “She's off and running. I'm proud. She's got a good head on her shoulders. We always tell her, ‘You're lucky you have us,’ but it's true. She has parents who came up in the business and we can help her find her way, right and wrong, and questions to ask and things to avoid. And so far, so good,” Lisa told PEOPLE.
She inspires Clint’s songwriting
Ever since their marriage, Clint has written his songs based on his relationship with Lisa, and referred to her as the "biggest influence" in his life.
"Once we fell in love," he told PEOPLE, "then any love song I wrote had to ring true to who we are."
Songs inspired by Hartman Black include the couple’s duets "You Still Get to Me" and "Easy for Me to Say," per Country Living, "When we got married, my capacity to feel deepened," he said. "Our marriage, who we are together, guides me. The big question [was], what would the two of us being saying in front of the rest of the world? It had to ring true for who we are."
She’s also a singer
Besides being a musical inspiration, she’s also sang with him on many songs, including 1999’s "When I Said I Do."
Before they married, Lisa recorded four pop-rock albums between the 1970s and mid-1980s.
"His career was so huge, and I had done my thing, and I just pretty much let it go," she told PEOPLE.
But Clint is a huge fan of her voice. He told PEOPLE, “As soon as she opens her mouth and starts singing it does something to me. I know the wonderful person behind that voice so it becomes a great big joy for me.”
They appeared on The Masked Singer together
In 2020, the couple performed as Snow Owls on The Masked Singer. Clint told PEOPLE, “I looked up at Lisa and I said, 'Well, listen to this,'" he shared. "We just laughed at the idea of it, and then we looked at each other and we knew that we were actually going to think about doing it. And it took about five minutes of talking about it seriously and then we were in. It was that fast."
Lisa added, "We had never done anything like this, so we really leaned on each other."
And the couple shared their excitement. “The minute we looked at each other, we both went, ‘Yeah.’ Once we made the commitment, we were so excited,” Lisa told PEOPLE. “And then we just did Zoom calls and went through hundreds of songs. It was so much fun.”
They toured together
The couple also went on tour together alongside their daughter Lily Pearl Black, cleverly titled "Mostly Hits & the Mrs.," in late 2022 and early 2023.
Clint told PEOPLE the tour was an opportunity to "keep creating something out in front of us that we have to be ready for and go do and enjoy. Doing this tour is a new chapter. It's challenging, exciting, fun."
