Up close with the new Jaegers from 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' — in toy form (exclusive)
The Jaegers are coming — and they’ll make a fine addition to your toy shelf. While we’ve seen brief glimpses of the new fleet via the Pacific Rim 2 teaser trailer and on the viral GoJaeger.com site, Yahoo Entertainment has an exclusive first look at the painstakingly detailed action-figure versions of the human-augmented monster-mauling mechs featured in the anticipated sequel.
The first three Jaegers out of the gate are Gipsy Avenger (the model commanded by star John Boyega), Bracer Phoenix, and Saber Athena. Produced by Diamond Select Toys, the approximately 7-inch action figures will be on display later this week at New York Comic Con to coincide with the release of a longer Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer that will presumably show the robotic warriors trying to save the planet from interdimensional monsters known as Kaiju.
Let’s get up close and personal with them, beginning with Gipsy Avenger. According to the GoJaeger site, she is “the flagship leader of the Mark VI fleet. More than just a Jaeger she is a symbol of hope to millions.”
Although he’s a previous-generation model, Bracer Phoenix “can still run with the VIs,” per GoJaeger. As for weaponry, he “shoots from the chest, with a centrifugal vortex cannon that is as spectacular as it is deadly.”
Finally, we have “the sleekest and most elegant Jaeger ever created, Saber Athena.” This striking mech “is the fastest in the fleet, wielding twin blades in hyber-acrobatic combat.”
Diamond Select will produce two versions of each Jaeger: a $24.99 deluxe model with interchangeable parts and accessories and fancier packaging, which will be sold at specialty shops and online retailers, and a “streamlined” $19.99 edition to be sold at Toys “R” Us. The toy line, to be released next spring, will also include the Uprising Jaegers Titan Redeemer and Guardian Bravo, as well as previous-gen models from the original film and, of course, a selection of Kaiju.
Few details have emerged about the movie, which co-stars Scott Eastwood, Charlie Day, and Rinko Kikuchi. We know the plot picks up a decade after the first installment, which saw the Jaegers manage to stop the Kaiju invasion from a portal deep in the Pacific Ocean. As the GoJaeger website describes the setup for the sequel, “the Jaeger program has evolved into the most powerful global defense force in human history. … When the Kaiju threat returns, we will be ready.” First-time filmmaker Steven S. DeKnight (Smallville, Daredevil) steps in for original director Guillermo del Toro, who came up with the story for the sequel and remains onboard as a producer.
New York Comic Con runs Thursday through Sunday. Pacific Rim: Uprising is in theaters Feb. 23, 2018.
