CMT Awards Recap: Gregg Allman Tribute, Earth, Wind & Fire, and a Male Romper
Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelly kicked off the CMT Music Awards with a tribute to the late, great Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. Allman died on May 27 from complications from liver cancer. Guitarist Derek Trucks, who officially became a member of the Allman Brothers in 1999, joined the country superstars onstage for a rockin’ performance of “Midnight Rider.”
The tribute was a great way to start the night, and Nashville star Charles Esten took the reins from there as the host of the show. He did a fun bit with country’s biggest stars sharing Rayna Jaymes’s house, since she won’t be needing it any more. (Too soon?) But Esten’s standout moment of the night was when he donned a men’s romper. As Esten walked out in his romper, Luke Bryan caressed his leg before Esten said, “I was told by some very fashion-forward friends of mine that these were in. Thanks a lot, guys!”
Keith Urban’s CMT Awards
There were some awards handed out as well, although they could’ve just named them the Keith Urban Awards, because he was the big winner of the night. And while he thanked a lot of people in his many acceptance speeches, his sweetest thank-you was to Nicole Kidman. Keith said, “I want to say a massive thank you to my wife, Nicole Mary, because you have no idea how much of what I do, she’s involved in every little piece of it.”
One of Keith’s awards was the Collaborative Video of the Year for “The Fighter,” featuring Carrie Underwood. The two hit the stage for a performance of their award-winning song, and they were just one of the many awesome collaborations on the night. Florida Georgia Line were joined by the Chainsmokers, Brothers Osborne performed with rock legend Peter Frampton, and Luke Bryan was joined by Jason Derulo. But the best was saved for last as Lady Antebellum teamed up with Earth, Wind & Fire for some “September” in June.
