Coachella 2024 live: Music kicks off in the desert and influencers debut looks ahead of Lana Del Rey set
The Friday afternoon of Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2024 is underway, ahead of tonight’s highly-anticipated headline performance from Lana Del Rey.
The double weekender will also see headline performances from Tyler the Creator and Doja Cat. The second weekend takes place from Friday 19 April to Sunday 21 April, with the same artists performing at both shows.
Friday also features rising Mexican singer Peso Pluma, rapper Lil Uzi Vert, French dance act Justice and K-pop boyband Ateez.
Organisers and fans will be hoping for a steady ship this year after Frank Ocean pulled out of performing at the festival’s second weekend last year following a “chaotic” performance.
Asides from its reputation for drawing influencers, many celebrities have been known to attend the event over the years, with Vanessa Hudgens being unofficially dubbed the Queen of Coachella.
The festival will also include some must-see art installations, food and drink, and immersive experiences for ticket holders, which you can read about here.
Key points
Barry Keoghan was on camera duty at Sabrina Carpenter
03:49 , Kevin Perry
Saltburn star Barry Keoghan has enjoyed a breakout year, and he’s now widely rumoured to be dating Sabrina Carpenter.
Eagle-eyed fans spotted the Irish actor down the front for her Coachella set, and captured him filming Carpenter while looking altogether smitten.

Yee haw! Is Beyoncé to blame for Coachella going cowboy-core?
03:35 , Kevin Perry
Just weeks after the release of Beyoncé’s acclaimed country album Cowboy Carter, Coachella is filling up with dedicated followers of fashion kitted out as if they’re off to the rodeo. Coincidence? We think not.
Coachella makes highly requested change to alcohol consumption rules
03:31 , Kevin Perry
Regular readers will know how much I detest the 21+ drinking pens at Coachella (Frequently I’ve found myself penned inside a drinking cage like a battery hen, screaming internally: “My kingdom for a cider bus!”), so I was delighted to hear that they’ve relaxed the rules this year.

Brittany Howard is a solo star
03:06 , Kevin Perry
She may have made her name as the frontwoman of Alabama Shakes, but Brittany Howard is proving on the Gobi Stage just why her solo career is already “monumental” just two albums in. Don’t miss Stevie Chick’s interview with the Nashville-based singer songwriter from earlier this year:
Brittany Howard on grief and Alabama: ‘I didn’t believe in any higher power anymore’
Skepta brings a taste of grime to the California desert
02:38 , Kevin Perry
Tottenham-born MC Skepta is on the Sahara stage right now, roaring through “Show Out”, his 2020 collaboration with Kid Cudi and Pop Smoke. He’s a long way from North London, but there’s plenty of fans rapping along to every word in the crowd.
Sabrina Carpenter takes Coachella to a seedy motel
02:08 , Kevin Perry
Sabrina Carpenter has gone all out with her set design: She’s constructed a baby-blue roadside motel onstage, complete with a crashed car and some watching cacti. She first appears onstage riding a neon heart-shaped sign before climbing through a motel window and thrilling the crowd with her single “Fast Times”. “Coachella scream!” she instructs following a guitar solo, and the audience are only too happy to oblige.
Chappell Roan is a ‘Femininomenon’
01:40 , Kevin Perry
Chappell Roan has just whipped off her oversized tweed suit on the Gobi stage to reveal a bodysuit reading: “Eat Me”. A real pop star move. Backed by a three-piece band, the artist billed by no less than Elton John as a ‘queer pop superstar in the making’ had opened with a thrilling rendition of last year’s “Femininomenon”. Read our in-depth interview with Roan here:

Rising star Young Miko draws big crowd to main stage
01:06 , Kevin Perry
Over on the main Coachella stage, Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko has a huge crowd eating out of her hand. It’s an impressive feat for an artist who only released their debut album Att. a week ago, but her take on Latin trap is purpose-built for afternoons like these in the sunshine.
The Japanese House take two
Saturday 13 April 2024 00:54 , Kevin Perry
The Japanese House are back out on stage. “We did it, hello!” smiles Amber Bain, seemingly triumphant after battling technical gremlins. She rolls through a pulsing version of “Sad To Breate”, but she’s clearly still having trouble hearing her own vocals, guitar or much of anything else. “This must be fun for you guys, watching a group of musicians totally s***ting themselves?” she apologises, but the truth is next tune “Touching Yourself” sounds magical. Just a shame she can’t hear it!
The Japanese House delayed by technical issues
Saturday 13 April 2024 00:42 , Kevin Perry
The Japanese House take the stage a mere 10 minutes later than scheduled, but it’s a false dawn. After announcing that her band are experiencing technical difficulties, Amber Bain leads them back off stage again until things can be fixed...
Welcome to Coachella 2024!
Saturday 13 April 2024 00:30 , Kevin Perry
The Friday afternoon of Coachella is already well underway, with Australian DJ Mall Grab just wrapping up his loved-up set on the festival’s Mojave Stage. Concerned fans of The Japanese House may note that he was scheduled to finish 25 minutes ago, so we may see some delay in the English indie pop favourite taking the stage...
Elsewhere, excitement is of course building for Lana Del Rey’s headline set tonight, and for the appearance of K-pop band Ateez, whose dedicated fans have already made sure they’re in prime position for tonight’s set on the Sahara Stage:

‘Why wild horses couldn’t drag me back to Coachella'
Friday 12 April 2024 20:16 , Tom Murray
Coachella isn’t for everyone. Kevin EG Perry recounts his nightmare experience of Coachella 2022 here:
“It was the second rickshaw that did it. The winding, dusty trail that leads from the Coachella taxi drop-off to the festival site proper is so long and circuitous that cyclists ply their trade along the marathon route. A couple of years ago this week, after half a mile or so of hiking in the baking sun, I finally caved and agreed to Venmo a jock with thighs the size of Christmas hams half a week’s wages to pedal me towards the distant strains of music. Eventually, we came to a fence, then a gate, and beyond it… another crowd of cycle rickshaws.”

Friday 12 April 2024 19:30 , Inga Parkel
Hollywood’s favourite celebrity couple – Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce – could be attending an iconic event in California this month.

“I am a Coachella guy,” he said. “I love going to Coachella. I love live music in general. So you might see me pop up over there at some point.”

Saturday, headlined by Tyler, the Creator, will see performances from Britpop survivors Blur, New York rapper Ice Spice and electronic artist Grimes.

From surplus of sunscreen to comfy shoes: Here’s how to survive Coachella 2024
Friday 12 April 2024 15:31 , Olivia Herbert
Music lovers and influencers alike are descending upon the California desert to join in on the annual revelry and chaos that takes place at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
This year, the first weekend of the 2024 Coachella festival begins on Friday 12 April until Sunday 14 April, followed by its second weekend on Friday 19 April to Sunday 21 April. Lana Del Rey, Tyler the Creator, and Doja Cat will headline both weekends, along with performances from Gwen Stefani’s reformed ska punk band No Doubt, rapper Ice Spice, and Mexican artist Peso Pluma.
As someone who has been there and done that, there are certain must-haves and things to avoid that I certainly would’ve benefited from knowing as a first-timer and not-so-seasoned festival attendee. First and foremost, whatever you’re wearing truly doesn’t matter. You will most likely give up on looking somewhat chic by day three, and may resort to wearing an ill-fitting band tee and cutoffs and call it a day...

Get ready for the flood of influencers... and maybe some music, too
Friday 12 April 2024 14:01 , Inga Parkel
Coachella, renowned for attracting celebrities and influencers from across the world, will also see Friday performances from Mexican singer Peso Pluma, South Korean DJ and singer Peggy Gou and US star Sabrina Carpenter – who has just finished opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.
British musical stars descending on the desert also include British DJ duo Anti Up and Gorgon City, MC and rapper Skepta, and indie pop star The Japanese House, real name Amber Bain.
Daisy Jones & The Six star Suki Waterhouse, who recently gave birth to her first child with Twilight actor Robert Pattinson, is also billed to perform at the festival on Friday.
The British actor, model and singer confirmed she had given birth earlier this month by sharing a sun-kissed Polaroid of her cradling her child, who was wrapped in a blanket adorned with love hearts.
She later described having her first child as a “humbling” experience.
The return of Coachella comes after it ran into problems with headline acts over the last two years.
Last year, Frank Ocean pulled out of his second headline performance because of a leg injury, while Kanye West, also known as Ye, was due to headline in 2022 but the line-up was updated weeks before the event.

Coachella 2024 begins!

Lana Del Rey will return to Coachella music festival to kick off headline performances across the first weekend of the performing arts event.
The Californian festival takes place over two weekends from 12-14 April and 19-21 April, and will feature other headline performances from Tyler, The Creator; Doja Cat; and a No Doubt reunion with Gwen Stefani.
US singer Del Rey, who rose to fame in 2012 with Born To Die, will headline the Friday slot at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, having last appeared at the festival during her debut in 2014.
The Summertime Sadness star was scheduled to feature in the 2020 line-up, which was cancelled amid the Covid pandemic.
The 38-year-old hit the headlines last year after she arrived late for her performance at the BST Hyde Park festival in London, just weeks after her microphone was cut off at Glastonbury when her set overran because of her late arrival.
